Hi Everybody: Looking for suggestions, thoughts etc. about the lens in question. First will it be useful for indoor basketball games. (Low light). Second will the auto-focus work on my D-90? Thanks for your input.
The lens I am thinking of buying is AF-S Nikkor 50mm f 1.8 G.
I have the 1.4. If you are using it on a cropped sensor body, like my D7000 it is about a 70mm equivalent. This is good for Basketball action under the net. If you can walk around and get under the net, you can get some great results from that lens. If you are farther away, you won't get the impact. Need to be close to the action. I always shoot vertical when I'm at basketball games. If you want, I can post some images using the 50mm in this thread.

I use the 1.8 at our high school basketball games with less light than you seem to have and it does a stellar job. If you can get close it is the lens you want. I shoot with a D300 and am not sure about the differences in our cameras.
yes I would like to see your photos. Thanks.
Take a look at the 85mm /f1.8. It is on sale for $100 off via authorized Nikon Dealers ($399) and may be a great way to help you to fill the frame. Like the 50 it is a excellent value

If you could please use "Quote Reply" when responding to a particular post, then that person and everyone else knows the context of your comment without having to read through the entire thread. This topic has been fairly easy, but it could easily get more complicated if several people post their pics for you to see and you are commenting on all of them.

Sorry I will do that in the future.

The 50mm 1.8G is a nice lens but if your camera has a drive motor look at the 50mm 1.8D instead. Same excellent results for about $100 less.

This is just one result with the 50mm from directly under the basket. Settings:
f/1.8
500/sec
ISO 1250
This is uncropped and unprocessed. Just how it came out of the camera. No flash. Hope it gives you some ideas

can't open anymore than 3.5. I was thinking the 50mm 1.8 would do the trick as long as it will autofocus on the D-90
With D610 can get down to 2

I agree the AF 50mm f/1.8D is optically equivalent to the AF-S 50mm f/1.8G, but for shooting indoor sports, the improved AF speed of the AF-S lens can be helpful.

I have the D90 , I have the nikon 50mm 1.8 . yes the 50mm works great on the d90 just make it on right and that little switch on the barrel is in the right spot . but you already got a good lens for your game . I would say better than the 50 mm these ones you show here these are all throw aways ho hum pictures get a sports mag look at the shots inside , you won't find any like you have here . it looks like a bunch of city workers standing around waiting for coffie brake . it looks like you took them all at 40mm to 60mm , and you have the len's to make it exciting , use the zoom get in close don't try to show the whole dance floor . only the interesting couple , the one with the ball and the one trying to get it for get about the rest unless some goes down . for get about the 50mm . you have that covered in your len's range any way . the lighting looks good just open up all the way and one click back with f stop .
use 1/300 sec and higher 1/1000 1/1700 use iso of 400 and higher if you have to . ideal would be iso 250 shutter 1/800 fstop 5.6 or as small as you can . but don't try to get every one in the picture . once in awhile but the bulk of your pic close up's . get the contorted face the dirty looks . and if your not taking at least "at least " 500 or more shots a game your not trying hard enough . one shot every couple won't cut it , go see a pro game and watch that shooters there , they never let up . don't forget close up's one person torso shots . face shots . and if a fight braks out or something interesting . leave your finger on the shutter . get a couple 16 Gig cards at 30 m b per second yo don't need any faster than because once your buffer is full it won't go faster than one pic a sec tell it clears . but you can still take burst of pictures at 20 or more before it slows down . and set your camera on continues focus . and set it up so you can change iso and shutter speed and
fstop and exposer composition all with going into menus . turn your ael and fel on so you can move your spot Nestor around . and set it up for matrix meatering . your good to go .
