Hi Everybody: Looking for suggestions, thoughts etc. about the lens in question. First will it be useful for indoor basketball games. (Low light). Second will the auto-focus work on my D-90? Thanks for your input.
The lens I am thinking of buying is AF-S Nikkor 50mm f 1.8 G.

It'll work. A tad short if shooting from the stands - pretty good if down close.

I can get pretty close to the action. Just want to get cleaner shots, more light, etc.
Thanks, Jules from Vegas

And yes, it will AF on your D90.

What you are using now is working well, but you need to open it up and let in more light, also reducing your DOF so the background is less sharp, and les distracting.

You may want to consider the Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G, $400 at B&H with a rebate. That will give you a little more reach and still work very well for indoor sports. I think those are your best choices to get f/2.8 or faster for under $500.

What lens do you have now? If you have one of the 18-something zooms, you try it to see which focal length works well for the games.

Do you know how to look at the EXIF data of your pictures? It will tell you what focal length you used for these pictures. Sometimes it will list two numbers, the focal length and the "35mm Equivalent". In this case, you care about the actual focal length.

can't open anymore than 3.5. I was thinking the 50mm 1.8 would do the trick as long as it will autofocus on the D-90

I really like these shots, mainly because of the reflections in the floor.

"3.5" is the aperture. I'm the focal length is the number between the 18 and 200, which changes as you zoom.

Getting a f/1.8 lens will let you get more light, although it will also reduce the depth of field, so focus errors will be more visible.

I just looked at some of the pics. Focal length averages about 31

Then if you get the 50mm f/1.8, you will get a little "closer" to the action. The first couple of times you shoot with it, your pictures will be worse, because you'll be learning to track the action while seeing less of it through the viewfinder, and because of the needed focusing precision. But once you get used to it, the pictures will be better because you'll get more of the expressions.

You could try an experiment at the next game: set the zoom to 50mm for one half and 85mm for the other, and see which you like better.
