Here is a link to a way to increase the performance of your Canon Kit Lens.

http://petapixel.com/2012/02/09/how-to-increase-the-performance-of-your-canon-kit-lens/

There are factors that go along with this increase in performance.

One is psychological. By impressing people with the red ring, you will likely gain a bit more control over you "handholding" technique.

Another is physical.... get a tripod and use it whenever/where ever possible. :D

Getting back to your original question, both Canon and Nikon are great companies with great cameras and lenses. Both companies make full frame cameras and smaller APS-C sensor cameras, so they make lenses (DX or FX or equiv) for each. Now they both make professional lines of lenses. Getting away from L series for Canon and EDs for Nikon, the bottom line is that the lenses are either fixed focal length like 35MM, 50MM, or 85MM etc or a zoom with a fixed aperture like 70-210 F2.8. The zoom lenses are basically tanks that are big, heavy, and expensive. You won't catch a pro dead with a mega zoom 18-200/300mm zoom, because they are to big of an optical compromise. Fun and practical for the casual shooter, but not for the pro.

I am a canon user and if I do not have the money to buy a white lens, I paint the lens, that I can afford white, so it makes me feel better. Kind of like stuffing a sock down my pants when I was a bachelor!

That's one area where I think Nikon missed the boat, and it has been discussed here before. Canon's top lenses are called L lenses. If you want to impress someone, just say that all your lenses are L lenses. They also make some of their top lenses white, so they stand out in a crowd, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

Nikon has no such designation. They use the term ED on some, referring to it's ability to reduce chromatic aberration, so an ED lens would be better than a non ED. Still, they need a simple way to identify their top lenses. Unfortunately, ED is not something that most men would want to brag about.

I think 'ED' (and we are talking lenses here )stands for Extra-low Dispersion.. designed to reduce chromatic aberration, I'm not sure if it pertains to coatings or the type of glass or both

Bunch of wise guys.

Lots more fun than most of the posts though. Is Viagara treatment for Nikon glass that fails to expand?

During football season, a fellow can put on a pair of Depends, have a cooler of beer next to him and watch three games never leaving the couch.

I know the topic is Nikon vs Canon lenses, but I recently purchased a Sigma zoom (150-500mm)lens and so far I like it. I'm using it mostly for shooting surfing pictures. How does the Sigma lense compare to the Nikon and Canon lenses? Most likely inferior I'm sure, but I was curious what others think about Sigma.

Years ago, who would have thought that you would see a large section in the supermarket for Depends and similar items? It's good that someone can provide products that people need. I just hope I don't have a need for Depends. Although, I have heard that people who go to events where they will be away from a restroom for hours will wear them.

A major part of the market for Depends is driven by calls to Time Warner Cable customer service. The hold times often exceed bladder holding time. In addition, the idiotic and sometimes dishonest customer service sometimes causes the victims to be enraged to the point of losing control of bodily functions. Time Warner, of course, recently gained local fame for screwing up the TV coverage of the Superbowl, then mishandling the thousands of calls by not telling people the broadcast was available (though unannounced) on an unimpeded different channel.

The extra capacity Depends should be renamed "The Time Warner Diaper."

Mr B, I'm with ya on that, I would not hesitate to paint a lens white, especially if I shot with a Nikon, as I would no longer have to walk around feeling sheepish.
But fortunately, I never needed the sock, but I'm sure it was effective for you, and that's the only thing that really counts. Smart man!

Nikon and Canon go back and forth with technology. But it's pretty clear that at least for the moment, Canon is better at advertising and marketing and making their products more recognizable.

Professional lenses are expensive. Very few of them have some flaws but in general the image quality is superb regardless of who makes the lens. Independent lens makers are also making excellent glass when it comes to their professional line up but they do not hold the value that OEM does.
My experience as a Nikon shooter of over 50 years is that Nikon lenses in general are very well made. You cannot expect a $120 lens to be as rugged and as well constructed as a $1500 lens, I think this is obvious.
I am in entire agreement with the previous explanations you have received from other members of this forum.
