The "Canon or Nikon" question is in the UHH Top-10 Dogmatic Discussions (TM) list, probably even top-3 (raw/jpeg, zoom/prime are probably the other two, off the top of my head). So getting 9 pages of responses with that topic title doesn't surprise the rest of us. :-)

A lot of people will say that you don't have to worry about buying "beyond your knowledge range". I will agree, with the additional point, that you should not buy "beyond your interest range". But for exactly what you should buy, I'm sure this topic just made things even more confusing. :-)

Please post a link to your work. Thanks.

Most of what I do have is offline at the moment. I appreciate anyone's insight and patience...we all have to start somewhere. My most asked question? What am I shooting! Do I really look that unprofessional because I can't decide? Lol

I asked what you were shooting because that would affect what you should spend your money on. Now that you've said landscapes are a big component, something like the Canon 10-22mm lens should get serious consideration, but if you had said any sort of portrait photography (family portraits, weddings, seniors, pets, etc), that would not have been on the list, but something like the Canon 16-85mm would.

A lot of us have enough affiliation with pros (plus the current or retired pros) to know how difficult the industry is. And a big part of the job is selling your competency. You didn't sell it with us, so it wasn't clear how you were going to sell to potential clients. But passion and dedication go a long way too, and people will see that and come around.

I'm also into portraiture...but it's just not something I feature as of yet. I'm not trying to sell myself here...nor should I be, lol

As I said, I was merely trying to get an idea on pros and cons...not so much on the scare the newbie aspect :-)

Understood, and good luck. :-)

Also, just to add...I was originally looking at the Rebel t3i, then saw the t5i. I had decided on the t5i until a friend came to me with an opportunity...but this opportunity only works with Nikons. Up until the time I asked, I hadn't researched the Nikon...so I'm not sure if this helps in the confusion, or adds to it ;-)

It adds to your confusion. Doesn't change mine, I can differentiate all the current Nikon models.

What was the opportunity, if you can share?

Which is why I turned here, hahaha...crazy me :-p

I was offered possible training and work for a company that shoots weddings. I'm afraid I don't feel the need to limit myself and I'm afraid I won't have the free will that a contract permits. It's a great opportunity...but something is holding me back

Apprenticeships can be challenging, but if you haven't shot any weddings before, then it sounds like a interesting opportunity. What are the restrictions that you would face with the contract?

I'm not altogether sure as of yet, but I believe my freelance work might be a conflict of interest, so to speak

Yes, that would be a reason to say no. I could see a contract where all photos taken during the event were theirs, not yours, but anything outside the event was not bound by it. Otherwise, it sounds more like indentured servitude than apprentice...

Maybe you need to look further into the future?
Where do you want to be in 5 years?
Will an apprenticeship of sorts help you get there?
Will you be learning off a photographer that you respect their work, or a nobody with no outstanding work?
You feel this will stifle you in the short term, but will you stifle your long term opportunities if you don't take it?
Only you know all your circumstances. We cannot answer this for you.
