I believe in good spelling, and I try.
A few months ago, I was making a comment on this forum and I made the mistake of using "there" instead of "they're" and somebody on this forum climbed all over my shit for my spelling and use misuse of the word.
I was totally taken aback and just really surprised by his rebuke. Finally surmised that the man had nothing better to do in life and let it go at that.

That is something that gets right up my nose people who are to idle to type out the word, it is one thing to be in a hurry with a phone message (text)but just bad manners when answering a query on a forum.

Sorry Malky but.......people who are TOO idle to type out the word

I do not mean to cause any offence to you Malky we can all make small mistakes.

I read every word and despair at bad spelling or bad grammar also.

Whenever I compose a post on UHH, I will click on "preview" numerous times to check for spelling errors, grammar errors, etc. before I finally click on "send", or delete what I have written. I have mentioned spelling errors to some people but don't do it anymore. I have found that a lot of people on UHH are offended easily and correcting spelling is about the most offensive critique you can make. A lot of people, even those who have not been corrected, will call you the "spelling police" or tell you to "get a life" or say "get over it". Actually, I will seldom make any comments anymore about anything because many UHHers get so offended so easily.
I don't even know why I am posting this, sometimes I just can't help myself.

Re-check your spelling. The word is GRAMMAR with an a and not with an e.

You know, having recently aquired a tablet, I agree with you, it is just so fiddly trying to put the curser in the right place to edit out a typo, and so easy to make a typo. Just since my last comment on this thread I saw a post titled "By with Cow" and the subject was obviously "Boy with Cow". So prevalent. Are so many folk really using mobile and tablet?

I know what you mean. Like curser and cursor. :D

Believe me this is not a criticism in any form against anybody. On this forum I see many cases of incorrect spelling. I just wondered how important it is.
It is to me but I'm sure to many people it does not matter a jot. It might to a prospective employer but that depends on the job. You don't need to spell if you are, say a bricklayer but you might if it was a clerical job.
I am not talking about the differences between US and UK spelling. US spelling always seems to me to be logical.

Not important to me!!

WE all have differant gifts and for some of us spelling is not one of them. Check my disclaimer below. I think if too big of a thing is made of spelling that soe folks will just not post and they may have great info to share. - Dave

English is a combination of many languages, and contains many ways to describe, illustrate and explain. For this reason, it can have a clarity and precision of meaning seldom matched among Earth's many languages. To degrade our language because of sloth, inattention or stupidity, is a shame. As we watch our educational system falling apart (check notices from your schools or teachers, both oral and written), I can see no reason for this other than deliberate, programmed stupidity.

I agree that spelling is important not only to show you are kind of literate and respect others and yourself but ...very important.!! to preserve the language for the next generations......

I was probably one those most guilty of fueling your angst, for this I apologize. But as with many of us, as we get up in years, our spelling appears somewhat childish. At times I would blame it on the circle of ones life drawing to a close but decided that was to depressing and would just say W-T-H, they can figure it out after all they were smart enough to ask the question. Lest I digress excessively, got to watch that train of thought, I have found the ideal answer to this problem. It is a very small program known as (iespell), here is the link for it
http://www.iespell.com/)
Needless to say it works only with a Windows PC but I think they have listed something for the Apple group as well. Being inside of IE it works with anything one might be writing. It's a winner. Check it out it might make a bunch of us happier.
