I like this a lot! As for competitions, I think should be a separate category. Then let everyone go crazy :)

As a juror, I agree.

I love using special affects on my photos and have seen some great photos from others on this forum that use them. However, what is your opinion of using them on photos that are entered into contests? I don't have any facts to support this, but I feel that judges look at special affects as gimmicks and will not give high ratings. However, in my local club contest, I did win first and third on an annual competition of monthly winners. I'm the only one that has submitted photos with special affects.

Love to hear your opinions. I've attached the winning photo to show you the special effects I used.

Very nice picture... First off, what constitutes a special effect? Would this include any post-production work? If so, then every picture taken in RAW would be considered to contain some special effects. I know of very few RAW shots that don't need at least a little tweaking here and there. That being said, there are categories for pictures with special effects. The contests I have entered stipulate that if the effects are obvious, then they should be entered into the special effects category. Why would you want to do anything else? A prime example would be HDR. To me, using special effects (properly) moves photography from a craft to an art, and allows the photographer to better convey an emotion or tell a story. Special effects are fine, so long as you don't try to put them across as something they are not. There are some contests where there is no digital post production work allowed. Those folks still use film, and it's amazing what they can do.

Moose, I love this image and effect and it is exactly this out of bounds effect I have been wanting to learn in Paint Shop Pro. Very nicely done!

I'm not fond of special effects, I feel they often are way overdone when something softer, simpler would be much more effective. Although I wouldn't do it for myself, I do kind of like your coloured rendition of the emu.
Whether a photo with special effects would be seleted in a comptetition would depend on the judges, on the specs for the competition and on the categories for the competition.
But hey, why not try it? If you are allowed more than one entry, it may even be possible to enter the same picture twice, one with and one without the special effects.

Moose sometimes I too like to use special effects. I really like yours. Most of the time I will go way off the normal just for something so different it really attracted attention. I am going to attach an example of what I am talking about. I used this effect back many years ago in business. This is not great by any standard but give the idea of what I talking about.

Photo manipulation is what I call it. Take a regular picture and alter it in any photo editing program like Photoshop CS. It's a lot of fun to do.

This can also be done in Corel PaintShop Pro. There are instructions on how to do this in "Picture Yourseslf Learning Corel PaintShop Pro X5" by Diane Koers from Course Technology. Excellent book with lots of help.

I agree about the use of special effects. They can be overdone. Squiggles look too fake. The real feathers of the bird would look better. I do like the 3D effect.

IMHO, no two judges will ever rate a photo the same way.
Mostly the take their first impression to decide "Do I like this photo?" They will then look for reasons to justify their first impression. On more than one occasion I've had a "honours" mark from one judge, then an "not-accepted" by another.
I've even had one judge mark down a photo because the didn't understand the title!

Love that effect, Moose, the detail is great. I have one of my faves. that I use to play with, the first two have been already been posted. When I get bored, I use #1, (the original and basically out of the camera), to use my effects on. So it goes from....

the original, to
the original, to...

a fun picture, to
a fun picture, to...

an out of bounds
an out of bounds...
