I love using special affects on my photos and have seen some great photos from others on this forum that use them. However, what is your opinion of using them on photos that are entered into contests? I don't have any facts to support this, but I feel that judges look at special affects as gimmicks and will not give high ratings. However, in my local club contest, I did win first and third on an annual competition of monthly winners. I'm the only one that has submitted photos with special affects.

Love to hear your opinions. I've attached the winning photo to show you the special effects I used.

Thanks Sidney, if you have PS Elements 11, check out Guided as it will step you through the entire process. It doesn't show you how to do Squiggle. That's a software on my iPad.

I like this a lot! As for competitions, I think should be a separate category. Then let everyone go crazy :)

Thanks Linda, I agree a separate category would be great. I'll suggest it to the club. BTW we enjoyed our Acadia trip and your suggestions were helpful.

That is a great image, congrats on your win...what is "squiggle"
The only thing I would comment on is the effect on the Emu has really changed what an emu looks like, colours, etc. Or was this your intention...

Thanks Jerry and Ron. Ron, notice the feathers are twisted or squiggled. There is an iPad app that applies that effect, and also will change the colors as well. I presented this in B&W as well, but I liked the color version better. I'll send the B&W for comparison purposes.

I'm not fond of special effects, I feel they often are way overdone when something softer, simpler would be much more effective. Although I wouldn't do it for myself, I do kind of like your coloured rendition of the emu.
Whether a photo with special effects would be seleted in a comptetition would depend on the judges, on the specs for the competition and on the categories for the competition.
But hey, why not try it? If you are allowed more than one entry, it may even be possible to enter the same picture twice, one with and one without the special effects.

An image such as this would be allowed in our club and council competitions as long as it was entered in the proper category. Our categories follow the guidelines outlined by PSA (Photographic Society of America). It would be fine for Color Pictorial, which is basically an open category. Just about any color image is allowed, with no limitations as to amount of post processing, subject matter, genre, etc. if it were entered in Nature, it would be disqualified, as special effects, and all but minimal post-processing are not allowed. It could probably be entered in Creative, which calls for images which "alter one's view of reality", but it would quite possibly be dismissed as just an image with a special effect as opposed to an alternative view of reality.

I do enjoy the image, and think it could be fun to develop a series or set of images making use of the internal framing effect. With a few variations (raptor flying at you with wings "outside" the internal frame?) a nice collection might be made.

You meant "special effects" and realized it - I guess - since you made the correction in your last sentence.

Now "special affects" sounds intriguing. Something we all should explore.
