thanks

I shoot raw and use different programs for different cameras. No one program is perfect and all have features that I like.

CS6-64/Bridge
ViewNX 2
Capture NX 2
Photo Gallery (jpg)
Helicon Filter 5
Olympus Viewer 3

Photo Gallery is easy to use but does not convert raw files.

Aperture 3 is very easy and intuitive if you have a Mac. Simple conversion to B&W. Doesn't do weird effects such as neon or pastel chalk etc. if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Lightroom is the best starting place. It makes all your edits non-destructively and you don't have to worry about layers and the more complex tools. It is very intuitive and you can learn to use it quickly. Plus, it keeps your photos organized and helps you get them ready for print or web-sharing.

For more complex editing, you can easily add photoshop (either the full version or Elements) when you're ready, and your Lightroom will keep all those photos organized right alongside your originals.

I use Elements 11 with several plug ins. It is easy to start with the guided mode and then slowly learn the Expert mode. I use Lightroom for it's excellent cataloging features.

Hello blues
Just to confuse matters more I shoot raw format and use Paint shop pro x6 as my main post processing tool.
And I also use DPP with my canon setup. One thing about the uhh forum and photography there is a lot of variables involved and the learning process never ends.

A big strength of Lightroom no one has mentioned yet is the ability to apply a preset when you upload your files. RAW files are unusable directly and with a well-constructed preset you can get off to much better start with them as compared to fixing each one. It also has the ability to synch settings from one photo to many so if you find a set of adjustments for a group you like you can simply copy those settings using synch.

A RAW preset is smart enough to ignore jpeg images, so you can upload both from a card with no problems.

Nonetheless I have Lightroom convert all the files to DNG files on import.

Me too. The conversion takes some time but it helps all the rest of the processing run smoother and faster.
