Picked up my D300 & think I understand what you are referring to . It's not a "black square" as much as it is a little "box" & as others have said, it is the focus point that the camera uses. Simply ignore it if you have manual focus lenses on...

Thanks for the info. I have found out from Nikon the same thing. It is NOT an item which can be turned off. I just work around it.
