I use a manual focus lens on my Nikon D300. If there a way to turn off that little black square which is right in the middle of the viewfinder? It goes off when the camera is turned off. It is very annoying when trying to focus.
Thanks

I'll check back tonight when I return from work. If you don't have an answer, I'll try to find one for you.
I keep thinking that there must be a way to turn this off because it's not strictly stationary-- so it's not like a gridline on the viewfinder. However, I played with my D300, with both auto and manual lenses and I could not turn it off. Perhaps another D300 user can help. Do you still have your manual? I've misplace mine-- but I don't recall that they covered the use of manual lenses.
Sorry I couldn't find an answer....
I don't see that on my D300... Maybe do a "two button" reset. This will return settings to factory defaults. It should solve your problem, but if you have any changes made to the defaults, you will have to go & redo them after the reset..
I have read other articles around the web and no one has figured out how to turn off the square. Maybe it can not be disabled.

Why don't you move it to the right or left so it's not in the middle?

I don't believe it can, either. I did the reset & tried everything on the menu.
A call to Nikon support may be in order...

Just tried my D300 with a 50mm 1.4 AI lens and could move the square with the multi-selector button and it will go to the right or left or up or down. That's the focusing spot that controls the focus confirmation. Hope this helps.

Sometimes I think Nikon service is run by idiots. I ask Nikon the same question I have ask here and my response was I needed to send my D300 in for service and they would check it out. Scarey ............

As I stated earlier, why not move it out of the way?

I would really rather not see it at all BUT I will try your suggestion.
Thanks

Do you use the "in-focus" green dot when manually focusing? If so, moving the focus area square to the side will affect the function of the green dot. It will be looking at a different area in the frame. Just another thought.

Why would you not want to know where the focus point is?
