I agree with Roy, I use a Sigma 10-20 and absolutely love mine!

I like to shoot landscapes with a long lens. I like the look of the compression it offers.

I, too, am looking for a landscape lens suggestion. I have a Nikon D800 and am vacillating between a 24mm prime lens and a 14 to 24mm zoom. Any suggestions?

First 24 mm is the top end of a wide angle, you will significantly get more image at 14 mm. The lens is 2.8 through the entire range. the 14 -24 is very sharp. That is my recommendation on my D800E.

I moved to Oregon 8 months ago and now spend most of my time shooting landscapes. I shoot with the Canon 60D and the Sigma 18-250. I would like to go to a prime lens or the Sigma 10-20 and wanted some suggestions from some of you landscape photographers as to what lens you are using.

Thanks

Just watched a webinar on Creative Live where instructor said that a 35mm prime lens is the perfect landscape lens

Really? 35 mm is not considered wide-angle. It may be perfect for certain situations but it is more of a portrait lens than wide. You could use any lens for landscape for that matter but there are significant differences between 35 and 24-14 mm.

I looked back at my landscape photos with my Nikon 14-24. In almost all instances, I am at 14, 16 and rarely 24. I am sure you will get good pictures at 24 but I like the option of the 14-24.

Good luck

I forgot that the OP had a crop camera and didn't account for the 1.5x factor. Go with the 14-24 for wide angle/ landscapes.

Why not the 10-24? Much better lens for crop camera.

Did the instructor share with everyone where to find the perfect landscape? :-)

Right; my point was that 24 on a full frame is true wide angle and not so much on a crop, with 10-24 on a crop you would also have that true wide angle.

This got a little confusing because Pappy has a 60D, an APS-C camera, and jmcgloth has a D800, a full frame camera.

Thank you, I hate when someone hijacks a thread.

Yes, it did complicate things. It's his 5th post, so he may not have realized that it would be confusing, and a separate topic might be better. I responded to him, not realizing how things were going to get out of control.

I do a lot of landscape photography with my Canon 7D. My go-to lens is the Canon EF-S 10-22mm. Check out the reviews on this site and other sites. It gives the same quality as an L-glass lens. I absolutely love this lens.
Good luck!

I agree with Mr B, on this one. I tried all the other super wide angle lenses, and choose the Canon EF-S 10-22mm. The glass is super sharp, and as good as any "L" glass in my bag. Moving to a EF lens of a higher mm will be to high once you figure the crop factor. (24mm=38.4mm) I'm sure you will running your landscapes through PP, so you may want to vignette the edges anyway to bring attention to the center of the photo. I've seen the Canon EF-S 10-22 on Craigs List for as little as $300 near New Orleans.

Hi Pappy, I just pm'd you and I shoot with the 6D and I used the Sigma 10-20 on my T3i and loved it but like I said going from a APS-C camera to a FF I had to change to the designator of DG instead of DC with Sigma's Glass. I also shot with the Sigma24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 105mm f2.8, 50mm f/1.4. I have a blast with my Sigma Glass and at only a fraction of the cost of Canon's Glass.
