I moved to Oregon 8 months ago and now spend most of my time shooting landscapes. I shoot with the Canon 60D and the Sigma 18-250. I would like to go to a prime lens or the Sigma 10-20 and wanted some suggestions from some of you landscape photographers as to what lens you are using.
Thanks
Pappy
I have a D7000 which is a cropped sensor camera. I love my Tokina 11-16, but I also use a 35mm f/1.8 and I also carry along a 28-300 zoom. This zoom can come in very handy.
I, too, am looking for a landscape lens suggestion. I have a Nikon D800 and am vacillating between a 24mm prime lens and a 14 to 24mm zoom. Any suggestions?
I travel a fair bit and bush walk regularly so prefer to carry just the one lens, an 18-300 for my D7100. I find it does almost everything I want. If anything, I'd like a longer zoom for wildlife, but that's not your primary interest so it ought not bother you.

For wide view landscapes I use my 18 - 105, it covers most views very well and gives me that bit of "zoom" if I need it...

On a D800 I'd put a 24mm prime, for sure.

Probably every D800 user has this question. :-)
The 24mm is much more convenient than the 14-24mm. My dad has the 14-24mm, and while it's a great lens, he just doesn't pick it up very often. It's
much easier to keep the prime at hand.

Since you have a crop factor lens, I think it makes sense to get an EF-S lens for wide angle shots. An EF lens is designed to cover the full frame sensor, and a lot of the cost and optical engineering goes into making the edges look decent, but the AFS-C sensor doesn't see that.
It appears that there are no EF-S prime lenses shorter than 30mm, so your choices are mainly an EF prime like a 14mm or an EF-S zoom. Since the zooms get to 10 or 11mm, I would go that route.

Pappy I also shoot with a 60d and the lens I have is the tokina 11 to 16 2.8 and love the lens super sharp. I tried the canon, tamron, and the sigma. I found the Tokina to be very sharp even in the corners. The price was not bad either.I bought mine from adorama used and paid less than $500.00. It was in perfect condition .The canon was my next choice. Good luck with your decision.

The Sigma 10-20 is OK. I suggest the Sigma 17-70.
I would go up to Pro Photo Supply in NW Pdx and rent what you think would work and try them out. They also sell their used lenses so you might get a good deal on the one you fall in love with
21mm Zeiss Distagon will deliver all there is to see to all your D800 pixels. Not only a prime but manual focus as well. But then that isn't an issue when infinity starts at about 7'
I have the 25mm Distagon for my 800e, but will upgrade to the 21 someday... when the kids have graduated college and I don't get the - pay the equivalent of a ziess21mm lens in cash by tomorrow, or your kid can't register for classes sort of love letter- and I have three kids in college.
The Sigma 10-20 is my favorite outdoor lens. It's quality and versatility are outstanding.

I do a lot of landscape photography with my Canon 7D. My go-to lens is the Canon EF-S 10-22mm. Check out the reviews on this site and other sites. It gives the same quality as an L-glass lens. I absolutely love this lens.
Good luck!

Welcome to Oregon. I've tried several lenses now for my landscape work, and I find myself reaching for two lenses: for my Canon 6D the 17-40mm f/4.0L, and for my 50D (crop) I use an EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. Both of these lenses are under a thousand bucks. I've also used a more expensive 24mm f/1.4L prime for my 6D, but honestly the other lenses are more versatile in my opinion.
I don't know much about the Sigma 10-20mm, but this sounds like the right focal length for your crop camera. Good luck, and enjoy all the beautiful landscapes waiting for you to capture here in Oregon. :-) -Mark
