Also, if you're like me, DON'T take your water pill.

Make sure the front and rear elements of your lens are clean the rear element is often over looked and is a source of dust

That's great if you don't mind the thing flopping around while you are trying to shoot.
The trick for me is reaching the super glue stage before loosing the cap.
It last longer than the string does :-)
If you are shooting on a sunny day, and your subject is close to you, you might want to use a flash. Sounds odd, but this helps with some of the shadows on faces from the sunlight. Also, it is best not to shoot a face with the sunlight coming from the side. You will get shadows from the nose and eye socket. Again, a flash can help this.
Always use a UV or Skylight filter over a lens. It doesn't really effect the image but protects the lens from dust scratches and splashes. It's easier to clean and can be replaced easier and cheaper. I leave the lens cap off when I am out shooting using the filter as a "cap" until I go home and then put the cap over it. The other day I bumped the lens and bent the threaded portion of the UV filter on one of my lenses. It bent the threaded lip but the lens was ok. If no filter was attached it would have been the lens threads that would have bent!
Buy Focus Magic software program. Amazing!

On a more serious note, I always carry a "bridge" camera with me. Mine happens to be a Panasonic ZS20, yours could be any approximate-equivalent; but the point is it fits easily into one of the pockets of the photographer's vest that I always wear. For a lot of folks, I suppose the equivalent is their camera-phone.
I tell myself that I always carry it in case I'm in an auto accident; but the important point is I always carry it. I've used it hundreds of times for opportunity photographs and I've never had to use it following an auto accident. My m4/3 cameras are almost always with me; the bridge camera really is with me every time I leave the house with my clothes on.

What do you carry when you leave the house without any clothes on?

Focus is the only thing that cannot be "fixed" in PP. I've fixed under/over exposures, glare, unwanted items in frame, etc. etc. but still have photos that would have been perfect if not for focus errors. WOULD have.
You might want to check Lightroom 5. I hear it can fix some focus problems. I plan to upgrade next week and will know for sure.

Or have them delivered to your work address then sneak them home in the convenient, always with you camera bag.
Hmmmm....not that I'm saying I've actually DONE that....
When shooting into an alligator pond, don't turn your polarizing filter the wrong way and "unscrew" it into the pond.
