it's funny , when I started out in 1965 I couldent get enough of reading all the photo mag's . and what the setting's were on the camera, and kind of len's what power etc . as I got older I still looked but not as much at the settings as at the pictures . now I don't give two hoots what setting the pic
was taken at . what do you think because some thing was shot at what ever setting of mount rushmore , that you can go out there set your camera and get the same pic . all it does is get you in the ball park. there's to many variables to contend with , time of day , sunny, raining, cloudy, etc, what I find of more value is setting,s for nights , star shots moon, fire. works , car racing with blur back ground foot ball , hockey intenchely blurred or not . running water creeks in the woods , water falls . but posting this on every photo of fluffy pawing the Christmas tree decorations is a wast of time . in my opinion .

Thank you Wikipedia. Now we know. The tools do matter.

Thank you.

wtompkins,

You are correct if you viewed images from this forum, and you did not select images that had the Download link under them. The download link transfers the original image and all its data, including EXIF. The images posted without the Download ability have all the data stripped out, and the image file compressed to enable faster loading of the forum page.

When you want to test your browser plugin again, select an image that has the Download link, click the link to download and display in your web browser window, then use your plugin to display the EXIF data contained within the image file. Keep in mind some image editing software provides the user with an option to save the EXIF data inside the saved image file as a .jpg, and some users do not place a check inside the box.

So there are two places that may need to be used to include the EXIF data; 1-When saving an edited image file as a .jpg; 2-When uploading an image to the forum.

Just in case you want to play right now, I will include an image upload with limited EXIF data.

well I just think this site if full of 'photo snobs'....good photography for the most part has not much to do with how expensive or how current your equipment is.....more to do with how you 'see'

Aren't you glad it's not full of spelling and typing error snobs. :D If it were maybe everyone's posts would make more sense and not trip the readers up with misspelled words and make them guess about what was meant to be said.

Ok I think this is being misunderstood by some! I am new ,again I want to buy some cost effective lens and I know what they are and it would be nice to see other folks using them to see their results. I am not looking for the pro stuff. Haven't you ever wondered what lens , and the exposure one used to take a picture? To me these are learning tools, and I know they can be tweeked a lot. That's all I am saying

There's always those who "miss the boat" but this has been hashed and re-hashed several times in uhh and it does very little good to ask 35,000 people to do what you want them to do to answer a few questions you have about lens you're interested in when it is so much less time consuming for everyone of those who want to know just ask. The reply will serve to answer all others in case there's anyone else who wants that exact answer.

I asked this same question shortly after I joined over 2 years ago and the discussion has come and gone several times since. It isn't likely to happen. Some do and some don't, yet I've never heard of anyone keeping that stuff a secret when asked. I often would like to know what lens so I WON'T GO BUY ONE LIKE IT.

Every day I look at all the fabulous pictures posted here and wonder all the time what LENS did they use? I want to expand on my lens for my Nikon D7000, currently I have the 18-55 and the 55-200 kit lens, and bought a 18-200VR that I have used for years and hardly take off.
Any how I am getting off the question of when we post pictures why don't you let us know what Lens you use. That way we can get an idea of what that lens is capable of.
Since I hardly see that, am I stepping out of bounds asking that question???
Just saying, I would love to know.

OOPS, my bad. F-86 attached. After the show he landed and taxied about 5 feet from me. Jet fuel really does stink.

While posting information about how a photo was taken and the lens used, I don't think there is any negative to not posting it. I don't think people should be disparaged as lazy or not caring when this info is not posted. Many times I have no idea of the setting of a particular shot. In the field I will bracket, zoom in and out, change the +/- setting etc. I am one of those who totally endorse automation in all ways. Back in the day I can still recall people trashing auto-focus saying they could focus faster than the Minolta 7000 (the first commercially successful auto-focus camera), and I think some probably could. Then came auto white balance, auto ISO, etc. etc. etc. To me the automation makes more time for a person to see a photograph and less time/need to fiddle around. There are "techies" out there that feel the need to fiddle around with their equipment, and to some extent so do I, but not all the time and not to the extent that I know what my lens or settings are for any particular shot. Believe me, this is not a soap box speech endorsing one view over another. Photographers shouldn't be degraded due to their way of getting their shots -- the end result is what is important. And to address the OP, what lens for a particular shot is less important info than finding out what lens people find highly usable and love for one reason or another. If you photograph a football scoreboard at 100 yards away, and someone takes the same shot from the 50 yard line and the crop is the same, not only will you need to know what lens was used, but where the person was standing. As you can see, some info is useless. If someone says they used a Canon L 24-70 f4 lens and you use Nikon equipment, will you be switching brands? Check here frequently and you will get a sense of what lenses are popular. Also check different rating sites like DXO, DP Review, Tom Hogan, etc. The best way to choose a lens is to think of what you want to shoot and then research what lenses would be best for that use.

It's the culture of this Bulletin Board NOT to publish all the relevant data for a particular shot.

There are other photography web sites in which I participate where it is not only generally accepted but expected to post the data, and others still where that information is MANDATORY for photo challenge consideration.

But not here.

AGAIN,

It is very easy to put that data below your image. The fact that the current social media climate HEAVILY revolves around "the simplest way out" philosophy really DOES indicate a degree of laziness here... ESPECIALLY for members old enough to have "come of age" during the film era.

If you or others consider it to be disparaging that wasn't my intent, however, it IS lazy not to post the data. That's true, whether disparaging or not. ;)

Has the uhh rule changed about NOT posting images in someone else's thread without their permission? Last I heard it would be cause for membership revocation. If you want to play "show and tell" with your images, it is suggested that you start your own thread and not take over the thread of others more especially if it diverts from the original subject matter.

Windows?

In that case, just save the image to your computer, navigate to it in Windows Explorer, click on the file-name and the information that's available will show across the bottom of the explorer window. You may have to make the strip wider to see it all by simply grabbing the top edge of that strip and dragging it upwards with your mouse.

So I am not getting to personal if I keep asking? I really am interested because I want to purchase a couple of new lens and really want to see results not just suggestions. I am more of a show and tell kind of person.

If you use Chrome, on the upper right side on the address bar, click on the 3 lines, then on "tools," then on "extensions," then down about 4 items you should see "EXIF" in an orange box. Go over on the right and click the "enable" box. Now, when you run your cursor over an image in a uhh posting the exif data will be across the image up along the top line of the image. If the exif data is not there, simply post a request for it. You may have to restart Chrome for the settings change to take.
