Well, you certainly need a D800. From everything I read the 800e wastes $300 for most photographers. Check the reviews in DxOMark.

The D800 is simply an amazing machine. I don't know which of it's features the D610 misses other than the smaller sensor. I went for the D800 over the D600 because a lot of my photography is of wildlife requiring substantial cropping and I want more pixels in the cropped image. I often use my FX 150-500 lens in DX mode for wildlife. The D800 gives you almost 16MP in DX mode whereas the 610 gives only about 10. But of course you have the D7100 for that purpose so that may not be a reason for you.

I also find the button layout of the D800 far superior to the D7000. I don't know which the D7100 uses. But then I recently learned something about the operation of the D800 that, if the D7000 has it, would have resolved that concern with it.

My issue was that I usually needed reading glasses to read the little green screen when using the buttons on the D7000...and I usually don't wear them. I didn't like the info screen on the D7000 because, unlike the one on my D5100, it didn't directly allow making changes to the stuff I wanted to change. But now I've learned two things with the D800 that might have also applied to it:
1. If you push the info button and then push the button to do something, that thing is the only one that comes up on the info screen: in bright large letters not requiring reading glasses.
2. You can program the backlight switch where you turn the camera on to also light up the info screen. Then if you push a button you are good to go.
So many opportunities...

Remember, though, to upgrade to FX glass you don't have to break the bank. If you can afford the f2.8 lenses, that's great. There are alternatives, however. For instance, instead of the 300mm f2.8, why not the f4? Although SwampGator shoots Canon, he shoots this lens a lot and uses a teleconverter with it and gets very sharp images. There are other primes out there, too, that won't break the bank. The 50mm 1.8d, for instance, is very inexpensive. I use the 28-300mm zoom on my D800 quite a bit, and it's a very good lens, but again, it's a 10x zoom.

Also your DX lenses will work fine on the D800 in DX mode for sure.

The D800 provides four total image areas you can use from FX to DX. While full FX also works OK with some DX lenses, at least over part of the zoom range, the intermediate modes sometimes work better with particular lenses. You need to play with each one in each mode over the zoom range to see what you like.

Nikon D800E $1999

Used or gray market.

I bought a refurb D800 for about $2,500. I think they still cost that. I highly recommend the Nikon refurbs. I have now bought three and all came in new condition and the two I still have continue to work flawlessly. (I dumped the D7000).

If you buy from Adorama or Cameta they throw in a one-year warranty upgrade (or charge a very nominal fee for it). The refurbs come with 90 days from Nikon. But then each has been broken in at least a little and given individual attention by a Nikon Tech so the chances you'll need the warranty are much reduced.

Ah yes.... and the motorcycles.... a bunch of those. My craziest and best loved:

1970 black short frame BMW R75/5 with touring tank. Restored it three times, until I learned about keeping the "Shiny side up, rubber side down" rule. Bought it for $1000. Eventually had three restores and $9000 in it.

Similar rule in general aviation..... "one good landing for every good takeoff".

Just remember, if you treat your photography like a good hobby, you don't have to use how good you become, nor do you need ANY other persons sanction to buy what you lust after.

As far as significant others, 3 ex wives learned the lesson about needing their approval to feed my hunger for "Things".

In fact, toward the end of each relationship, I simply introduced them as "Hi... this is xxxxxxxx, my future ex-wife."
Ah yes.... and the motorcycles.... a bunch of thos... (show quote)

That's funny because the last one and the one for the rest of my life was wife #4. I believe in keep doing it until you get it perfect.

I'm surprised at you.
How can a man your age not realize that the REAL joy in life comes from GIVING?
You would feel MUCH better if you bought that new camera and sent it to ME.

I can appreciate your comment on this.....

After number 3 the bar is set so high, .... well, you get my drift on this.

Don't get me too wrong on this. I got along well with all my wives, but being a rather selfish individual, I ultimately found marriage to be far too much of a compromise. Everything was considered "our stuff"...

Sorry, but I believe in my stuff, your stuff and a small common cache of "our stuff".

Number 4... Wow.... good for you. Is she happy living in the same one room cabin that I envision for a mountain man. And does she pack her share of the poke up to the cabin.

I have the D800E. This is a great camera. You have to ask yourself if you need a camera like this. Don't let people here make up your mind, you are in charge. If you really want one of these cameras and you will enjoy it then get it. Just to let you know, I only have one camera, thats all I need.

oldtigger, As a senior citizen which I assume you are from
your picture, all I can say is, "we only come around once."
so, if you can afford it and want it, then why not, afterall
we are all boys grown tall and we like our toys. the D800 is an excellent camera and if you want a full frame camera than why not go for it, and don't have that guilt complex.
It's yours to enjoy.

I was going to update from a Nikon D300 to an 800 but instead got more glass because that is where a lot of the quality comes from and the lenses I already have would not bode well on a full frame Nikon.
