The best camera to use for a photo is the one you have with you when you need to take a photo. Having a dozen really good cameras at home is not relevant.

This is a case for which you will have to consider the source. Most importantly, the person lacked tact. He is an incarnation of Shakespeare's Caliban. Moreover, Canon and Nikon are the top manufacturers of cameras. All the models in their stables are comparable. Nikon has an advantage in one category, Canon in another. The lead, including regarding the flagship model, goes back and forth. Canon races ahead, then Nikon.

Do the best you can with the camera you have and enjoy it. If you have a shoot on the beach sometime soon, you can take a grain of sand to cover your critic's comments.

You have no control over ignorant comments, these days Nikon canon Sony sigma the camera quality is all pretty close. If you like how Nikon works and feels in your hands then use Nikon, that's why I do. What's happening is other companies are coming out with micro 4/3 cameras and the big two are feeling the pinch. A few years ago everyone had to have a DSLR and they became a photographer so sales were hot. Now Pentax, Olympus and others are making smaller cameras and people are buying those now. So sales are down.

Nikon and canon will be around and I hope they keep pushing each other to make better high end equipment. And the day of my uncle just got a camera and he is a photographer now will come to an end. Allowing people who really care about their photography and have taken he time to really learn it can get back to the real business of photography.

Sounds as tho he is jealous of your abilities more so than the equipment that the both of you have. Ignore people like this, set your mark and continue on learning and progressing.
