My total impartiality on the subject is legendary.
Nikon cameras are made by artisans with thick glasses use precision tools and wear white dust coats and they make only excellent photographs.
Canon cameras are dug up from the ground by grubby transient workers and make only mediocre chips.

Nikon are fine cameras, so are Canons, so are Sony, and others. If they were not very good, you would not be able to buy them because they would not be around.
Couldn't agree more. I am very happy with my Canon, but I am sure would be equally happy with an equivalent Nikon, once I was used to the differences. I feel neither superior about my choice nor envious of others.
Remember the old saying
"Don't argue with a fool - he will only bring you down to his level then beat you with experience."

The person is need of training on how to deal with other people. Camera bodies come and go like socks. I've seen people with cellphone cameras compose great pictures.
I have been told that my equipment was also crap, I use a Nikon D3200, and yes compared to alot of your equipment this might sound like crap. But as I tell people it is not the camera that makes the phitographer, it is the photographer that often makes the camera. I have been shooting for 35 years and when told my equipment is crap I ask them to take a picture so we can compare right off the camera. I let them pick the format and subjects. We then get one shot each to see how the equipment works, I usually win. Low light and portraits are my favorite. We can only set our cameras settings before taking the pictures not durring the shoot, normally their rule, suits me fine. So if you are comfortable with your equipment challange them.

Does this guy use a 2005 model Canon P&S and is finding it a little difficult to upgrade? Being financially embarrassed makes people say funny things.
i thought that sort of talk went out with my high school years and pimples..for goodness sake
you know that the nikon d700 is one hell of a camera..and its all about the lenses too..not just the camera
most of all the photographer is what counts..years ago before i purchased my d700 and 2 of the d7000s with 4 quality lenses i used an ordinary point and shoot during my daughters wedding ..you would laugh if you saw it..a nikon coolpix with only 4 megapixels..since i didn't want to step on the toes of the guy she hired i stayed in the background noticing how awful he was ..she told me to stay out of it and he was the best photographer in brooklyn..well ..it turned out she used many of mine ..including for the thank you cards
like i said ..don't worry about some jerk that knocks your camera..i bet your photos are awesome..and thats what you should be proud of...
Back in the early seventies and even into the eighties lots of cameras from many makers were great, good and crap. There was a lot of innovation and pure greed going on. Some worked well and some just did not. In today's market for the prosumer, with Internet reviews almost instantaneous with the relaes dates all cameras are at least very good and of course some are great and will be classics ( for about 3 years until replaced by the next version!). For a camera to be considered "crap" it would have to be so bad that it would be doubtful that it would even capture an image! I don't beleive that in an imaging judged contest done correctly and honestly of course that you could tell what camera took what photo. The only major difference in cameras today that I would think really matters other than features would be expected durability and shutter count, and that is really a concern for pro or semi pro users. A Nikon D-40 or Canon Rebel will still outlast most serious amateurs as far as normal use. I am not saying we should use them but just as an example of what some might say are the bottom of the lines of both makers. They are still great cameras capable of taking far better photos than the average person can make.
You should ask the ignoramus if his camera is capable of shooting 8 frames per second... like your D700 is (with the vertical grip attached.)

Canon and Nikon, and some others, make excellent cameras. If you can't take a good picture with a D700 (my baby) or the Canon equivalent, it's not the camera's fault!
Remember, if you argue with an idiot, people may not be able to tell the difference... :-D
OK, I've just re-read this whole thread and I think all of us respondents should come to your house, pick you up, and then we go to this terrible ignoramus's house, and pepper him with questions about why he said what he said to you about that D700! Then we should force him to post his pictures on-line so that we can critique them... that should cure him of any further nonsensical statements about your camera for at least a while.
Doug, I would agree with you. A good photographer is not made by what gear he has.
No worries! You can't fix Stupid :). It could be a camera, car, clothes or where I live (Indiana) a tractor. Haters are going to hate because that's what makes them feel better!
The world has never suffered a shortage of assholes!

That person should be banned and deleted and delisted by administration ! Buy what you are comfortable with, and then trade up, or change brands or models if you are not satisfied...just like cars...not a na-na-na- mine is better than yours. I've got Pentax, Nikon, and Kodak in my stable, so pick away! BTW, have good, bad, and indifferent from each.
