AGREED. Whatever makes you happy and fits your needs is what you should get and use.

They ARE crap. Let me give you my address so I can recycle it for you.
;-)
The D700 is still a wonderful camera compared to any other manufacturer, including Canon. It's 12MP sensor might be a tad dated, but for the vast majority of shoots, it's more than plenty (keep the enlargements under 24x36).
The low light performance is very good, its handling is comfortable (not as bulky as the D800 for example). Which Canon was this dude sporting to be so assholic to insult you, since NO Canon for a similar price at that time (2008-ish) was that much better. Ignore what he said, it's nonsense. And for the record, neither Canon, nor Nikon, nor Olympus, nor Pentax, nor Sony, nor Panasonic, nor Leica are going down the drain!
Well if ignorance is bliss the person that made the comment must be feeling wonderful! But I am also sorry that people think there are only two dslr makers. I have two Fujifilm superzooms and a Sony A77 all are wonderful cameras. It is the archer not the arrow that finds the target. A local girl of about 12 uses only her ipad and frequently wins our club contests (about 300 members in the club) she has a great eye and does no pp other then crop. There are more crappy photographers than there are crappy cameras!

I see you're from Canada, so you're probably not used to encountering rude people. :D
Why worry about a comment like that? I read on the Hog, a few days ago, that the 5D III is a toy compared to Nikon. I still love my toy camera.
I think he might have camera envy but who really knows. I do know however I wish I had you D700. And you are correct...it is the photographer who makes the image but the correct equipment also is a plus.
"Consider the source of the comment" is he someone you respect? I bet not.

Lets take a good look at this idiot's wrong opiniion ( by the way I shoot Canon). Lets even assume he is right about Nikon ( he is wrong). The D700 is a very good camera which should last for decades if well cared for. If you are pleased with the results from this camera ingor comments from others with the intelligence of a can of peaches

Anyone who thinks a D700 is crap has no knowledge of equipment and can ignored.

There are lots of Canon users who wish that were true. Canon shooters are jumping ship to switch to Nikons at a record rate and it irks their fanboys terribly.
It's crap, toss it in a box, put my address on it, and mail it to me...I'll properly dispose of it.

That's just plain bull-crap. There are a lot of pseudo expert photographers who don't know their a-- from a hole in the ground.

You were probably told that by a user who owns a lot of expensive Canon equipment that he has no idea how to use and who rarely post pics and when he does he is the only person who can appreciate them.... Personally I think that the most important piece of equipment is between your two ears, I think that all manufacturers make equipment which is very capable of making excellent images.
I did tell two different people there cameras were not much good but they both knew i was joking they were both canons, only a fool would say say such rubbish just ignore.
