People can be REAL stupid when it comes to stuff like that.
Idiots saying terribly inappropriate things to law enforcement of any type is way too common.

And since we can't see your facial expression, we take whatever's written as non-fiction, without something to say otherwise.
Which is why I append "<VBG>" to my weak attempts at humor.

I agree. I should have at least added a few emoticons.

I would NOT make ANY jokes about that. Second last time I flew I made a sarcastic remark so they took me into a little room, did a strip search and asked me how much money I had. They 'fined' me as much money as I told them I had, then let me go and of course I missed my flight.

Was this in the USA, or in some place like Turdistan?

I had a conversation many years ago with security at Heathrow about high speed film, vacation memories, and scanners. He was professional, all business, and I knew that my film WAS going through the scanners! He said "if that film doesn't go through the scanner, you don't get on the airplane." Guess what? It went through the scanner! 😄

Turdistan will be the new name for the District of Columbia by the time Obummer leaves. If he ever does.

Checked the "search" area and can't find the info I need. Please tell me about taking cameras and extra SD cards thru Airport security and Customs/Immigration? Going on a cruise in Jan and sure don't want to lose any pics coming home. Camera will be on me and extra cards in carry-on. Thanx in advance! D^_^

NO PROBLEM, Xrays will not affect digital memory.

As a matter of fact, it was perfect! I think the "fear" far outweighed the actual problems caused by scanners. I was once told that two or three times scanned was OK, but not to send it through repeatedly. Anyway, I never had any problems! Obviously, zero issues with SD cards today!

I go to Africa twice a year for mission work in the slums of Nairobi and I am blessed to be able to do photo safaris on either end of the work week. I take a laptop and copy my whole team's pictures to it nightly and I backup to an external hard drive as well. We have come back with as many as 8,000 images before. We've had cameras and SD cards die natural deaths, but those who heeded my daily backup advice didn't lose much. I always have an extra p&s loaner for the poor soul that drops or otherwise mutilates their gear. We've never had anything get ruined going through security, but SD cards and hard drives are always subject to problems from magnetism, so I like the idea of all of our pics being on 3 different types of media, the SD cards, the laptop and the external hard drive.

The few bits of Russian steel I picked up in Vietnam forty plus years ago still seem to draw attention at security. A quick, friendly explanation before the alarm goes off will expedite the process but ...

Why go to the slums of Africa? Isn't there plenty of work to be done here? I always wonder about the so-called celebrities adopting children from Russia, Guatemala, Africa, etc. We have plenty of children needing homes in the US. I guess it makes them look good in front of the cameras.

Daily backup is great advice! On a recent Baltic cruise, I always backed up on a daily basis. You can't be too careful. :D

I get that question a lot. My humble reply is that I do a lot of human care ministry here in Austin as well, so I think I've got that covered. I always tell people that are worried about people here in the States that they should start a project to help where they see a need and I'll support it any way I can. But first, I think people should see the rest of the world and realize that even our poor people here are rich by global standards. I'm one of the leaders of a project that does vision and dental clinics all over Kenya, my church feels that going where the most people are, the slums, is where we can do the most good. I've been 10 times in the last 5 years and am returning this spring. And I make no apologies for it. It's been a blessing to those we serve and to us as well. That's my 2 cents, I'd rather concentrate on photography here and the question was about going through security with SD cards. I hope I didn't take the topic off track too far with my answer. My apologies if I have.

Actually I took the topic off track. It just bothers me that we try to care for the rest of the world when we have so many problems here. But that a topic in itself so I'll let it go. You sound like a truly caring and gifted person and I didn't mean to be insulting. I just see things from a different perspective. Good luck in your missions.

David, the energy of the x-ray cabinets used for security screening is insufficient to create ANY negative effects in your memory cards. Just not strong (energy wise) enough, nor is it the right wavelength to disrupt the architecture of a SD card.

And to address the questions about film... X-rays don't interact with film. Even X-ray film, which in fact works because the X-rays pass THROUGH the film and strike a screen which then phosphoreses, giving off light which DOES expose the film.

So no worries if you are a photographer concerned about baggage screeners. ;)
