Never YET. Never say never.
Anyway...
I'm with Chapjohn - download and reformat every day.
My cam has two slots. For fun, slot two is for that rare video.
For work it's backup.

I don't ever take the card out of the camera but use the USB cable to transfer pictures to my computer. Never felt good about popping the card in and out of the camera slot. I copy and paste the pictures to the computer so they remain on the card until I am completely sure they are safely transferred. I have never had any problem with my cards. :)

I'm a computer guy by trade. While I have been fortunate over the years, I have had countless people bring me SD cards for recovery and I'm successful at getting about 75% of them back in business. Many bad things can happen to a card, particularly when computers are involved. I have my most important files and pictures in at least 3 of the following places at all times. Online at Carbonite (they won't backup RAW files, unfortunately), an external drive, the hard drive of my computer and a yearly backup to recordable Blu-ray disks. The online backup takes care of a natural disaster or fire destroying my office and the other methods may seem redundant, but if you've ever looked into a Grandmother's face whose only copy of a picture of that precious grandbaby is gone forever, you'll understand. Online storage, external hard drives and recordable media are all extremely cheap compared to that scenario...

Never. I use once and reformat. It can happen but that would be very bad luck since the card is (or should be) very temporary storage.

The more important concern is your standard disk storage. The question is not if it will crash but when. I mirror my photo drive, do offsite to Crashplan and save anything I like to Smugmug.

If this is a poll I suggest you try to find another way. Imagine the situation if every member of this forum were to respond! What a chaos!

I've never lost anything from an SD or CF card and never had a hard drive fail. But I don't take any chances and have three external backup drives for redundancy. I also run software to detect errors on my hard drive (have had a few issues) and then run repair to fix.

This is a unique question of curiosity and to calculate my odds (and for fun)...
I've seen quite a few posts about people losing stuff due to SD cards going bad, corrupting.. etc... since I have been a member here... and I feel for all of them. That would be awful.
I want to first start with this just to keep me safe.. "Knock on wood"... lol
I have never lost anything from an SD card (I do backups a lot, but that's irrelevant if the SD card doesn't work to begin with when inserted into your computer). How many of you have never lost anything due to an SD card going bad?... literally nothing...ever?

Never have lost a thing, so far, but now that I've said that, watch out for tomorrow :)

I fell into the lake with my camera with 49 photos from on the SD card. Only nine photos uploaded, so I placed it on paper towel atop a bed of rice/selica gel kitty litter in a Tupperware container, alongside the camera and flash. All survived. I was able to retrieve all of the photos within a few days.

Other than that, no problems in five years.

I had problems with my cf cards several times, but eventually found them on my wife's desk. I now mark all my cards and haven't lost any pictures or cards since.

I have never had anything lost from an SD or CF card ever.

I always download to my laptop then once I confirm that all is done, I delete everything on the card pic file, then delete the DCIM file & all I leave is the hidden files.

Doing this, I've never had a mishap. of course I only use high quality cards. I'm still using a 512 mb LEXAR CF card from 10 years ago. I also have SAN DISC SD cards almost that old.
