Lens choices will depend mostly on what you are going to use it for . Everyone will tell you about their favs. My lens of a walk around most of the time is the 24 - 105.mm see what I mean .

I also have the Tamron 18-270. It's reasonably priced, unlike some of the other ones stated in the responses. Since you have a Rebel, (as I do) money is probably a factor.

For a walk around lens, you need something light and compact and won't get in the way. I suggest the 400mm f/2.8L.

I've used that lens as a walkabout lens before. I've walked around high school track fields with it. Sure I may have had a monopod attached to the lens collar and may have walked around with it on my shoulder but I still walked around with it. LOL.

I just picked up the Tamron 18-270 for my Rebel T3. Nice not having to carry around a bunch of lenses. Its image quality will never match a single focal length (prime) lens, but the wider the zoom range, the less walking around you will have to do

May I ask what is the weight of this lens? I do not like to use a tripod, but I also can't deal with a heavy lens. Thanks

My favorite by far is the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS. It fits the type of photography I like to do, from close ups (not macro) to old machinery and buildings. It's obviously not a BIF lens, but works great for just about everything else. Good build quality, very sharp, and constant f2.8. I also have the 10-22, the 60 macro, and 70-200 f4, but the 17-55 is on my 60D 95% of the time.

It's not too heavy and has a great range and it takes pretty sharp pictures.

Walk around lense to me means the lense that stays on my camera until I have a need to change it.

Is that your definiton as well?

I agree with you. I would call it my default lens ..... The one I shoot with most of the time and change out when needed.

Depends on where you walk around and what camera you carry. I walk around the city. Lately the Sigma 18-35 1.8 has been stuck on my t3i. On the t3i it is effectively a 29-56. The 1.8 is constant, so I have a lot of flexibility.

Obviously on a full frame the lens choice would be different. But on an APS-C, in-town this is an amazing piece of glass.

Not sure, but such info is easily available on the Tamron's website. Unless you are walking long distances and/or have serious medical issues, it should be light enough, especially when paired with the new Canon SL1 rebel body. If it still feels too heavy, a micro 4/3 system or bridge camera might be a better choice.

Mine is a Tamron 28-300. The 28 allows me to get tall buildings without the extreme distortion of wider angles, while the 300 lets me get decent shots of birds throughout the San Diego area.

Well SanDiego is a whole different kettle of photographic fish!

How do stand the constant perfect weather? Doesn't that get boring?

The EFS 18-200 3.5-5.6 and because my mom said so! The optics are very close to that of the 24-105 L 4.0 but has more range. This was my carry around when I had a T1i Rebel.

Well that closes out this discussion, I guess. "Mom said so!" That's good enough for me! :)
