Give some reasons why you think your choice is best?

Unless I am going to photograph birds, etc, when I use my 100-400, I find myself using the Canon EFs 18-135 3.5-5.6 IS STM. I have had good luck with family pictures, sports pictures of the grandchildren. It has enough of wide angle and telephoto that it is very effective for most occasions. I use it on my Canon 70D and T4i.

I have a Tamron 18-270 and like it a lot. It covers most aspects of what I like to shoot so I don't have to carry a second lens and don't have to change lenses when I am in a dirty situation (i.e. blowing sand and dust, sea spray, etc.) or when I need to grab a shot fast.

A lot of my shots are distance shots or details of buildings so I want a tele for those. This also has a "macro" position so I can get close ups of flowers ((or at least as close up as I want).

When I travel I like having a sort of wide angle when I am in tight situations such as city streets.

This may not be the best for everyone, but does the best for my needs and budget.

You'll get every zoom in the line up as responses, Canon and 3rd party. Since we're spending your money, look at:

EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Both have excellent IS, nice and sharp with good range.

I split shots between my EF 400mm f/5.6L and my EFS 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM depending on whether I'm walking around the park shooting birds and gators or walking around in civilization. I use them on my T2i and suspect that if I did an inventory a majority of my shots are through the 400. That's the long and short of it.

My walk around lense is - Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

It's not too heavy and has a great range and it takes pretty sharp pictures.

Walk around lense to me means the lense that stays on my camera until I have a need to change it.

Is that your definiton as well?

When I had my Canon T2i, I went with the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM not long after getting the camera and the 18-55mm kit lens. I was very pleased with the 15-85mm lens- good all around lens. As I contemplated going to a full frame body, I purchased the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. The lens was a little heavy on the camera and I lost a bit on the wide end but it became my walk around lens and I passed the 15-85mm on to my daughter. It was her favorite until she also went to a full frame body.

A deciding factor on the best walkaround lens for you would be to ask yourself whether you have the intention of going full frame down the road. EFs lenses work on Canon's cropped body. EF lenses will work on both but have somewhat of a limitation on the wide end.

The best lens that is EFs

Canon 17-55mm F2.8

It's as close as it comes to an "L" lens in the crop family because it's versatile, very sharp and holds a constant 2.8 great for low light condition.

The best lenses for EF:

Canon 24-105 F4 L

Come with IS and has a versatile range.

Canon 24-70 F2.8 II

Sharper than the 24-105 with a constant F2.8

I know others might argue my choices with third party lenses but I can only speak for the ones I have tried or own.

Sorry for the lack of response to your answers but I had something that came up that needed my attention! I've read all and appreciate your responses, I'll try to get to them later! Thanks

Sir, canon designed the 15-85 to do and perform for a crop cam what the 24-105 does for a FF.
The IQ of the 15-85 rivals that of the 24-105 with a better IS on a newer platform. the 24-105 is not wide enough for a good walk-around lens on a crop cam.
I personally would NOT plan my crop system around the fact that someday, I might get a FF. When you go FF, then just unload the EFs glass.
Good luck ;-)

Sirsnapalot: what sort of photo walking do you like or plan to do? The varied responses you see above are due to different "walking around" preferences.

I just picked up the Tamron 18-270 for my Rebel T3. Nice not having to carry around a bunch of lenses. Its image quality will never match a single focal length (prime) lens, but the wider the zoom range, the less walking around you will have to do

I have two favorite "walk around" lenses.

1) Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. Small / compact zoom lens great for having a "One" walk around lens. IQ very close to L lens, very fast AF.

2) Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM great for museum type picture taking. Compact and very sharp.

As much as i hate the jack of all trades, master of none lenses, I think the answer has to be one of the 18-200/18-200 plus lenses. Purely because of the focal range covered.

Is it what i would buy? No.
Had a very highly recommended quality one for my Nikon D90 and sold it.

I would rather specialise than compromise.
