Dumb question for all you experts out there.

Were you reluctant to post your first photo for fear that it might be so bad that people would actually make fun of it? Or, worse yet, tell you it's nice because they didn't want to hurt your feelings?

:)

Not on this forum (maybe one or two exceptions). Try some of the other forums, they will rip your heart out and hand it to you.

But that's not all bad. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." Friedrich Nietzsche

Guy1969. I bet that most everybody has this feeling. Here is my 2 cents. You are here to learn, (I hope). Some are very good photographers and some are very bad. If you ask for C & C you should get constructive criticism with positive remarks. If anybody says stupid things, just ignore them. Most everyone here is helpful and you need to face notes of how to improve if you want to improve. "Man up" and do it. You will not regret it. I didn't. David

Hi, Guy! Welcome to The 'Hog! As noted by everyone else so far, the great majority of folks here are helpful, friendly, courteous and kind, but someone should warn you that there are one or two resident trolls. They pop in, say something short and pithy and often quite nasty. You should just be aware of these guys. As Linda From Maine remarked, they seem to be having a permanent bad day. I will not mention names—you'll know them when you see them, if you see them, and I hope if you do you'll do as most of us do; just ignore them. Like all trolls I think they thrive on getting negative feedback. I just wanted to let you know because The 'Hog is a little like a big family: most folks are fine, but there's the occasional drunken uncle nobody likes but he's family too.

Hey, Guy... don't be afraid to post your first shot. This was my first post of the inside of my lens cap. It got rave reviews.

That's a real good one too.

I just posted my first photo, an, yes, I was quite nervous. Felt better after I realized it wasn't too bad.

Guy, many of my photos suck! Who cares? Some of them I thought were great, but found out otherwise. In finding out why they aren't great, I learned a lot. I still have so much more to learn, but the only way to learn is by getting good feedback from people who really know their stuff. So, if someone rips my photos with their critique, I am fine with that. Be fearless, have a thick skin and post away!!! Many will say "Nice shot" when you know better. Others will pick it apart and you may not agree with their assessment, but that's okay too. Photography, like any art form is subjective. One mans' treasure is another mans' trash.
The other thing is, if you are not a pro, the only one you have to please is yourself. If you are a pro, the only one you have to please is your client. You will never be a pro if you don't know what pleases others, so all critique is good to see, no matter how negative or positive it is when you look at it that way.
There are a number of members who will impress you with their skill and knowledge, while a few others you will learn to ignore. I can tell you this: If someone like Capt. C or Pale Pictures likes your photo, you have a great photo. If they tell you what is wrong with it, they know what they are talking about. Post and learn.

Hi Guy, welcome! The vast majority of fine folks on this forum :) are kind and helpful. Ignore the 1% who are "having a bad day" and just enjoy the experience. I learn new stuff everyday (and have enjoyed helping a few newbies as well).

WOW! I am totally impressed! You guys indeed are a nice bunch. Thank you so very much for the wonderful answers to my post, for the encouragement, for the warm welcome (and for the the "troll" warnings, lol). Guess I'll be "seeing" you all throughout the forum. Again, thanks a mil to each and everyone of you!

Guy, welcome to the Hog.
Hey, if you are looking for feedback for your pics, go ahead and just post.
Posting pics is not a prerequisite for belonging to the Hog. You are miles ahead of me. I've been here for more than two years and have never posted a pic. In fact, you've already got an avatar. I didn't manage to have one untill last month.
Guy, just fit in, in whatever way you want.
The worst that will happen , is one of the crusty curmudgeons will be just that, a crusty curmudgeon !!
Good luck, and again welcome.

Guy, the Chinese have a saying that goes something like 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.'

Take that step and start your own journey here.

Welcome!
