Dumb question for all you experts out there.

Were you reluctant to post your first photo for fear that it might be so bad that people would actually make fun of it? Or, worse yet, tell you it's nice because they didn't want to hurt your feelings?

:)

Welcome. Post it but, be prepared for the worst if it comes. A second but, accept and learn from the critique. Most of us are being honest and trying to help

Hi Guy! I am pretty new here too and like you was TERRIFIED to post my first photo. What I did was view others photos and read the responses. No one here is out to hurt your feelings. They are an honest and kind bunch. I encourage you to post a photo and Welcome to UHH!

Hey, Guy... don't be afraid to post your first shot. This was my first post of the inside of my lens cap. It got rave reviews.

And I thought it was a bull's-eye from a pistol target at 100 yards with a 500mm lens. I was impressed with the centering but then thought you might have had a FF body and just cropped but either way I was impresses with the accuracy of focus and IQ. LOL.

Hi, Guy! Welcome to The 'Hog! As noted by everyone else so far, the great majority of folks here are helpful, friendly, courteous and kind, but someone should warn you that there are one or two resident trolls. They pop in, say something short and pithy and often quite nasty. You should just be aware of these guys. As Linda From Maine remarked, they seem to be having a permanent bad day. I will not mention names—you'll know them when you see them, if you see them, and I hope if you do you'll do as most of us do; just ignore them. Like all trolls I think they thrive on getting negative feedback. I just wanted to let you know because The 'Hog is a little like a big family: most folks are fine, but there's the occasional drunken uncle nobody likes but he's family too.

OK, first things first: Welcome from another newby!
Then: There are NO dumb questions, only dumb people that don't ask the questions they want answers to.

Now that that's out of the way:
At the top of the page, where it says:
Photography Forum -> Main Photography Discussion
Click on "Photography Forum", then at the bottom of that list on All Sections.

In the next list you'll find a couple of sections that might interest you:

Photo Gallery - if you just want to show off your picture and get a pat on the back.

Photo Analysis - If you have a specific question about a picture you took.

Photo Critique and Analysis Forum - If you want a general critique of your image, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Frequently Asked Questions - self-explanatory

There are other forums as well that may be of interest to you: post-processing, close up, video, people.

When you go to each of the sections, you'll find that at least the first message, and for some sections, several messages, deal with the purpose and rules of that section. Just give them a quick read so you understand what that forum is all about.

Most of all: Find new things to learn, old things to improve on, and have fun while you're doing that!

Yes! The trick is not presenting it as the next Great Piece of Western Art. No one likes everything, and some people can find "flaws" in everything.

Every now and then I get the black screen of 'death' on my LCD screen.. and the view finder. It always humbles me, when I figure out I've left the lens cap on.............
