I have the 5D and love it. It is the first digital that I have owned without a cropped sensor. It is particularly great for scenics, landscapes, but as someone said earlier, with a great lens like the 24-105L or the 70-200L (both stabilized) it is wonderful for portraits. I have taken small sections of the frame and can make full size sharp blowups without any loss of detail.

On the other hand I miss the extra magnification I used to get with the cropped sensor and that the 7D gives you. I have a close friend with this camera and I can tell you it takes wonderful shots. So, for sports, wildlife pictures in general, I would prefer the 7D. This can also be used for scenics with some of Canons wonderful wide angle lenses like the 17-40mm L lens.

It is really a matter of what you like to shoot most. The build on the 5D is supposed to be better but I noticed improvements on the 7D that make it quicker to change certain settings and is more user friendly.

Personally, I think everyone should have both!

I own the 7D and love it. My brother owns the 7D and the 5D mk2 and says the 5d pics are better with the same lens and of the same subject. I think it is all in what your budget is and what you want to do with the camera. I'm waiting for the replacement of the 5D mk2 (rumors say that Canon is going to make an announcement in March or April). That is why you are seeing the price of the 5D start to drop.

What was the focal point? If you were using a low f stop, your DOF is very small!

i have the 7d and the 5dmkII. both are great. 5d is wonderful but the autofocus in low light is no where as good as the 7d. (autofocus in low light is very slow with the 5d) other than that, the 5d full frame is wonderful. i would highly recommend either.

if you do buy the 7d..make sure you always buy the ef series lenses, and not the efs series. the efs series is made just for the crop sensor..and will not work on a full frame. always plan for the future.

and always remember..the photos are 50% equipment and 50% the photographer. great equipment is awesome but can take just as bad photos.

i love them both and wouldn't give up either.

Both the 5D and 7D are great cameras. The 7D is newer and has much better focusing system ( and DUAL Digic 4 processors).

Check out Juan Pons Nature Photos for examples of what a 7D can do.

I took a seminar with him and was amazed.

Some of my best pics were taken at 3200 or 6400 ISO

Check out other cameras in that price range and good luck trying to match those results.

The 28-135 lens will disappoint. I once owned it but soon enough sold it. Avoid it. Buy the camera body without it.

I own the 5dmii and I would never go back to a crop frame. The lens work correctly and the sensor is better because of nature of the full frame and larger pixel size. I've heard from a few people that the 7d is a better camera in every aspect except for picture quality than the 5dmii. Picture quality is the most important thing. The 5dmii has almost killed off the 1d market. However, you are looking at a 5d. It's a great camera but it really depends on your needs, and what you can afford. It is an older camera and the new 5d miii is coming out so if you wait you might be able to get a 5dmii for steal. I might even sell mine.

Hi Photo One

I own a 7D it’s a great camera just to let you know you can buy it body only and purchase a different len’s from canon like the 24mm-70mm L lens or better still look at the 24mm-105mm L lens the last one has IS built into the lens it all depends on your budget!. Take your time looking and most of all have fun doing it...

JimH. I made a mistake when I was telling you about the 5D. The 7 D is the camera I am thinking about. I'm sorry. I saw it in the Camera Dept. at Best Buy the other day, on sale for $1,799.99 with a 28-135 lens. I have a Canon EOS 20D at the present time

I bought the 7d w/ the 28-135 lens before Xmas for about $1,500. Love the camera, but didn't need the lens. I sold it on Ebay for $290, so after fees and shipping my 'price' for the camera was about $1,240. Then I took the money I saved & put it towards a 24-105 f/4 L lens. Now I'm very happy with both!

I highly recommend the 7D and look into getting the lens with it, but selling it.

Hi, Newbie to Ugly Hedgehog here, but wanted to respond re: Canon 5D even though you're contemplating the 7D. I have both the 5D and the 5D Mark II and enjoy both immensely. I have both because I was advised by many to carry two cameras when going to exotic locations where a back up might/would be necessary in case of breakage, loss, etc. Good advice and easy to work with both since they are very similar. The Mark II of course has a video feature which I'm just starting to use but the full frame sensor in both is remarkable and the 21 mp is incredible.
I would also highly recommend the 24-105mm L lens for use with these cameras.

I bought my 7D "New" at Best Buy for $1599 with the 28-135mm kit lens. I wanted the body only ($1399) but they discontinued selling body only. As soon as I bought it I didn't even touch the lens, placed an ad and sold it for $300. So I got the 7D for less than the body only price when it was all said and done.

The 7D and 5D Mark II are both excellent cameras. If money is an issue I would get the 7D and take the saved money and get a good L lense (24-70?). I shoot everything with a 7D and all L lenses and get outstnading results. Good luck!

A 5D or the 7D are both excellent cameras that will serve you well and I would buy it from your local camera store - give them the business. regards

I do not have a 5D, but it rates very high for everything, but frames per second. If you are not a professional sports shooter, it gives you terrific results. Last I read it could do 5 frames per second, which would even be good enough to get you through a pinch in a fast moving event.
