jerrylh,

Those prices are way below what I was expecting. How often can one say that about anything these days. By 30 pages, do you mean images on both sides so actually 60 sides? Or 15 actual pages with 30 sides?

Sounds like I just need to stop worrying about all this, and "just do it".

And like you, just rounding up the images that I'd like to print will be an enormous task. I have tons of photo CD/DVDs spanning several years on which are the images I would want to include. But maybe I should make my first book of images taken on a recent trip to the Southwest. At least those are still in the computer and quickly accessible.

There will be 30 pages in the book with 74 different photos. Each side is a page, so this is 30 sides. Some are full page, some have 7 pictures to a page, some have 2 or 3 per page. You can select from a picture menu what you want as you go. If you change your mind before finished, you can go back and change it. I did this more than once. If you select a picture you have cropped too much and it has low resolution, the program will tell you and offer to make the photo the size it knows will print well. In my last book this happened 3 times. In 2 of them I replaced that picture with another, in 1, I left it as is. Keep in mind, most of these places have coupons off. When you register on Blurb or other company, you will begin receiving the coupons. You need to read the fine print on the coupons because the large discounts like 60% are usually for the more expensive books like 12x12.
Most companies have a basic price for a book of from 16 to 20 pages and you pay extra for additional pages. Some charge $3.00 per page and Blurb changed only $0.20 per page on standard paper, by far the least I found.
I have 54,000 pictures on my computer, so it does take time to pick out just 74. In that book, I started with 103 pictures and ended up with 74 in the book.

If you are using Lightroom software for your editing, then I recommend trying Burb.
It is incredibly straightforward and mistakes can be easily corrected.
They look professional and reasonable prices too.
I like the recommendation from jerrylh about doing a book for the grandchildren, using photographs like animals, birds, plants etc, that can camoflage imperfections - if you have any in your images. Might give that a go myself - great idea for Christmas presents.
Good luck.

We have been using Shutterfly for a couple years. Do it yourself or they will do it. Secret is to do it and wait for a special. Just had them do our Christmas cards. Also can share your book online for free. Very reasonable.

I have seen several done by Shutterfly that were great. A family member does several a year thru them. She has done some herself and also had them do some. They all looked great. she has a natural "eye" for taking good photos and videos, unlike me :(
sure can't get easier than having them do your books.

Blincs,

I use Picasa for what little I do edit......which is far from everything. I happen to work in a "1-hour"-type photo lab. So I usually do most of my tweeking (when making prints)there and not on my home PC. That could come back to bite me; since I must go from my PC to the publisher.

I think you folks have pretty much convinced me to go through Blurb for my first attempt at making a book.
Thanks to all for your suggestions and encouragement.

One last comment, especially after all the Blurb recommendations; I have used Apple for books which are of excellent quality, somewhat expensive compared to the latter. However, I just had a couple done by Costco, of all places, on line.
38 pages, glossy, both sides, 100+ photos! about $35, shipped free to the warehouse closest to me in about 5 days. Hardcover with photo and title on the front. Great flexibility as to size and layout.
You upload the photos you want to use to their site and then drag and place on the pages. It is very easy.
For what it's worth.....if you are a Costco shopper. BTW, they do excellent print and canvas work also.

I don't have easy access to a Costco where I live. Do they ship?

You have to be a member of Costco. The only ones in Minnesota are located around the Twin Cities along with one north in Baxter.
BTW, I have used their photo facility for about 5 years now for large sized frame-able wall mounted prints and also canvas enlargements. The great thing about Costco is that if you are in the least bit unhappy about the quality they will redo at no charge.

Another vote for Blurb.
There are a couple I have done with Blurb that I made available as free e books. Links to those are on my wildlife photo blog.

Was wondering if anyone has tried to make any books thru Wal-Mart. I'm guessing they are not as classy as Blurb, and the like. I know they are dirt cheap. But might look that way, too? I'm referring to the doubled sided paged books. Not those "books" that are basically 10 to 20 (one sided) pages of prints put into a pressure binder.
