I'm using photos I've taken as gifts for the first time this Christmas. The first is for my Niece (with her family) and the second is for my mother-in-law (scenes from her ranch). Both will be printed on art paper, double matted and framed under glass. Rough guess at how they will look framed below.
These will make great gifts, may I ask what size the pictures are in the scenes from the ranch,6x4?

Do any of you give photographs as gifts? If so, I wonder how people like receiving them. A frequent joke on sitcoms is the mother who gives her children a framed photo of herself as a gift.
I've given calendars with photos of family members, and I'm working on one of a friend's dog. They seemed to be well-received.
jerry...I've given photos and calenders (dogs, grandkids etc.) and they've always been well received. I usually pull out the stops and do something special...like 3 views blended into one photo or perhaps a nice border, just to lift it away from the "ordinary" . Yeh...go for it. People always appreciate the time you've spent on it.

Over the years I've given photographs of landscapes, architecture, etc and they have been very well received. Keep in mind, most of these were printed out at 13"x19" and framed in nice wood or metal.

Marilyn: Very close....each of the four photos is 5.87 x 3.75". The images were combined in Photoshop and then flattened as a pretty large TIFF file. The framed artwork was printed out at 9" x 12" to allow lots of "white space" for the matting.

It's come to the point that my children and grandchildren do not want money anymore and now ask for prints. I do give prints of people if there was a wedding but 99% of the are of places or things. What I do give is always on canvas and never smaller than 16x20. Every picture that I have given is up and in a prominent place and my name is always lower left or right and inconspicuous. However if there was someone that I felt or knew needed the money I'd probably send both! Very good friends also get pictures and they are very well received too.

ok, thanks I would like to to do something like that for myself with our vacation photos but I won't print them out myself.I always send my photos to MPix & I don't think they would be able to do that.Maybe I can find a mat like that & measure the photo space & have them printed to the size needed.

Sounds good. I also am having then printed locally at a special imaging shop. If you have Photoshop, I can try to figure out a way to make the PSD file small enough to email to you and you can substitute your own images.
I make photo gifts and find that the most popular are memory boxes (mahogany box, lined with velvet and a ceramic tile inset in the top.) Also popular are key racks with a square ceramic tile and of course coffee mugs. People often like to use old family photos, some of which need a little editing, but these are wonderful gifts especially for people that have everything.

Hi Jerry...I too have given calendars in the past and I just took advantage of a couple great sales and made up a few for this year.
I really like the calendars to give because one usually gives them to people that they mean something to. Then you are giving "memories" and that's a good thing!
Also, I just ordered my first canvas prints. (More good sales.) The owl eyes that were a topic in here about a month ago...I hope it will be a good Christmas gift!
I loved your owl image! I personally would LOVE to get that for Christmas!

I had calendermade for my Mother with all her grandkids pictures on it;she loved it. I had it done at staples it came out nice. all I had to do was take the pictures in to them an tell them which ones I wanted on each month.cost was about $10.or $15 .
I've been giving calendars for years. The year before last, I decided not to do it. In January, last year my son-in-law asked where his calendar was. Turns out, he has kept every one of them from the past ten years! He says they're in his desk drawer at work and he looks at them regularly. After asking other former recipients, I went back to making the calendars.
It's also fun for me to go through my images to pick out the best 13. Using Lightroom, I attach the keyword "calendar" to images throughout the year that I think might work. There are usually about 50 contenders.
People don't print their photos anymore so I've been creating a "year in review" book for my parent's. I get photos from other family members too, and try to make it creative and fun. They have everything else so if they don't like it I hope they never tell me. (Right Dad?)
I also scanned in 700 old slides and created a family book, starting with my grandparents dating. It took me 8 months, so that gift was a little lateĀ
(sorry again, Dad.)
Then I made a book for my sister, with her baby photos, birthdays, etc. I am glad I did not put off scanning in the slides, because the color was almost completely gone. In a few years we would have lost our childhood. Even if you scanned a few slides each year and created a book it would be a treasure.
There are even a couple websites where you can submit a photo and get it on a t shirt or sweatshirt. If it is a photo you really love for great memories or a great shot of a bird that would be a great gift. One site I can for sure remember off the top of my head is cafepress.com I found their site when looking for shirts with the Varied Thrush. They are just a winter bird for us. Beautiful birds.
