http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MYjyLg8bbo After watching this I realized that even though it was part of a TV show there was a whole lot of truth in it. My first thought was how I could apologize to the men and women that made America the greatest country in the world. I let it slip away. I served my country and paid my taxes and never took a dime without working for it. I can make it up to them for letting this happen. As the video explained I wasn't informed or cared enough to stop it. That will change
Reading the title of this thread got my hackles up and I opened it to give you hell and ask you to get out. But before I began, I read the rest and found your premise was absolutely correct. The only thing I would change is to change "not" to "no longer". I regularly wounder about the quality of life my kids will have after I'm gone.
Is America the greatest Nation in the World - Yes it is.
I have seen this video a number of times. It has been well posted here on the Hog. It's message does have meaning but... Is this the greatest country in the world - yes it is because I made it so. I made it the greatest country in the world for me and my family. I gave to her what I could give and I take from her only what was mine. Most of all I gave her my heart and my love. It may not be the greatest country for you but you will have to ask yourself, Why not?
Although I am older now, if I could I'd fight for her again and offer my all for her.
My country, not what she can do for me but what can I do for her. If you do not love this nation of ours and do not think that she is the greatest country in the world, then you have not given enough of yourself to her.

I too have seen this several times and it never fails to be thought provoking. IMHO, yes America is the greatest country in the world. It is because it is my country and I am proud of it and all who fought to create it from nothing. We have problems, but so do those other free countries. America is the best country in the world because we have attitude, and at some point that attitude will kick in again and we will go through more growing pains and God willing come out better for it. Just my thoughts, and because I live in America; I am free to express them, and you are free to agree or disagree with them.
We should aspire to get involved, make our representatives work for us not the rich and powerful. Stop arguing with each other about left or right and become Americans once again. Work and vote to improve education, that includes making a higher education affordable and not the road to a lifetime of indebtedness it has become. Show bright people on TV not the sit-com fodder. Just my thoughts here, I am sure you have your own thoughts on this. Practice critical thinking not talk radio when making choices for our representatives.

I suppose it depends on one's definition of greatness. I think whoever wrote the script for that piece hit it right on the head. We don't strive anymore. We don't reach. At least collectively we don't. I would also say that one cannot declare oneself great. Only others get to decide that. The greater I think I am, the less I am. The greater others think I am, the greater I am. Thus, I believe we have to get back to what made others label us as great. It's not a mystery, we just need some leadership and the will to start reaching again.

Yes this was from the HBO series The Newsroom. Jeff Daniels gave a spot on speech. Kudos to the script writers.
Thank you for your service to our country.

I thank you for your service to our country. The problem is not with America but the idiots that are trying to run it into the ground.

You hit the nail on the head. Our leadership sucks. Mediocrity begets mediocrity and when you have so many millions living off the public tit there is no incentive to strive to better themselves or the country.
