I've been lurking for a while and decided to join the crowd. I just recently got my first DSLR and feel overwhelmed (to put it mildly). I have a Nikon D3000 with the kit lens. I'm still trying to learn the camera. Wow! Who knew there were so many buttons and dials and settings? I hope to be able at some point in time to contribute, but in the mean time may be asking a lot of questions. Thanks ahead of time for your patience. I deperately want to learn how to do this, and I'm willing to put in the hard work to do it. Have a great day everyone.

Hi babynurse, and welcome to the UHH. Don't let that new camera overwhelm you. Read the manual that came with it over and over. Then get out there and take some pics, post them and you'll get plenty of critiques. Good luck.

Start in P mode, set the ISO as low as it will go and start clicking. Try to learn just one thing at a time, once you understand that, then introduce a new variable. I like to start with ISO, then aperture, then shutter speed and finally exposure metering.

These are just my suggestions, you might have different ideas.

Welcome to the Hog, post some photos soon, that's the best way to learn.

Me, I start in Auto Mode. Walk around the house or yard if your weather is nicer than New Hampshire and snap shots, looking for the odd perspective and close ups to reveals secrets of composition and color.

Good to have you onboard Babynurse, these folks will teach you real fast, and it's more fun than trying to understand a manual. :) :)

I've found three books that help me a lot:

Digital Photography for Dummies (I got it from my neighbor at a yard sale for a nickel)

Digital Photography by Scott Kelby

Understand Exposure by Bryan Peterson

and the manual for your camera you can go on line to 'free nikon manuals' if you don't have one

Busch's "D3100 Field guide" is a great book.

Welcome. I agree with several HOG members. Take some pictures on auto and display the pictures on your camera. You can set it to show the stats. Aperature, shutter speed, ISO. Later you can start changing the settings and have fun. With digital, there is no cost once you own the camera.

Welcome. Go to You Tube and type in Nikon D3000. You'll find numerous talks about how your camera works. Have your camera available when you watch..it'll quickly start making sense.

HI! I'm new too. Welcome! And I know what you mean about the camera. I've had my T2i just over a year and just got the 60D and still not sure what I'm doing. But it sure is fun learning!!
