Mariposa grove of giant Sequoias in Yosemite. It's beautiful there. Oh wait, I already work there 6 months of the year as a tram driver/tour guide.

Sounds like a busman's holiday then

Shame! Shame!

(And the funniest post I've read all day).

Cheers,

R.

In all the years of my my travels and picture taking, I am 81 years old, there is no place like ALASKA. You start in the first or second week in September, rent a car and drive around the state you will see the fall color, uncrowded highways, a photographers paradise. I have been doing that for many, many years.

I am going to Papau, New Guinea this coming summer and hope to get some great photography in. I am also going to Mexico for the Day of the Dead celebration which is another area I chose just for photography (as I did, PNG) Annemarie

Arches state Park, my husband and I camped there once and I woke up in the middle of the night and thought the light was on. The moonlight and stars made a light at night I had never sen before.

China. 3 years ago I traveled the eastern half starting up in the far northeast corner between N. Between the geography, geology, history, people, historical sites there's nothing more. China is the ONLY civilization on earth to have never perished. Egypt has come and gone, Greece, Rome, and so on but China has never ceased. It's history goes back literally thousands of years. It truly is an alien side of the planet to us. (Besides, the opportunity to spray paint your name on the Great Wall of China is awesome) ;-) I was down exploring outside the Wall and ran across a wooden plague that said ''Here on June 28 1998 President Clinton stood and said 'This is truly a magnificent accomplishment'''. and as I read it it dawned on me that I was standing there June 28, 2008.

I am sorry but I do not agree that Egypt, Greece and Rome have come and gone. They are very much with us but in a different way then in ancient times. China also has been transformed and is no longer ruled by emperors but by dictators but there is not much difference between the two. All of the countries are great in their own unique ways and need to be appreciated as such. Perhaps Rome and Greece more because they are democracies and have shown that is the proper way for governments to be.

If not Alaska or Hawaii, then I would say Utah in the spring or fall. There are so many NP there and a wide range of environments.

I have been to the 4 corners area and understand your choice. My trip also encompassed the Grand Canyon, but my choice might be Bryce Canyon in Utah. I never saw such intricate and complex variations of forms that changed from one minute to the next as the sun moved. You take a photo and 15 minutes later the colors and shadows have changed the composition. You can take trails into the canyon and don't have walk vast distances like other places.
Everything looks like it carver by a sculptor. If I can find one of my photos I will post it, but it was long ago before digital files existed!

For me I would go to the 4 corners area. Have been there before and just love the land, the color.

I must mention another place: Machu Picchu. Now that is quite a journey, but to get their from Cuzco, Peru, you take a narrow gauge train into the Andes. The Andes are 22,000 feet high, second only to the Himalayas, but may be more spectacular because they rise from sea level, not a 10,000 ft plateau. Machu Picchu itself is a fantastically shaped town of the amazing Incan technique of fitting hand cut stones of various shapes and sizes into geometric structures and buildings with such precision you cannot stick a knife blade between them. The site is located high on top of an Andean mountain that drops 1000's of feet on all sides, and is surrounded by other mts rising 1000's of feet on all sides. There is nothing else quite like it.

this is my second post on this thread. I take one road trip to Florida every winter and then one road trip someplace else. This year (2012) I choose to go back to Maine for two reasons, Moose and lighthouses.
