I use Nikons ViewX to transfer images from my cameras to the computer. It has a feature to delete the images after transferring if I want to. You might check your preferences in your software to see if there's such a setting.

Boy, that is a feature I would not like. Automatic anything with computers is generally not my preference. I never delete from a card - just reformat. Like JR1, and others, I just copy images to a folder. I hate it when a program does all of that,

I don't like it either, Jerry and never have I used it. After transferring the images and backing them up, I reformat the card in the camera.

I had three people witness this because it seems so bizarre. I have 2 Nikon D5100 camera backs, one with a kit lens and the other with a 70 - 300 lens. I often take photos in situations that make changing lenses too cumbersome and potentially damaging to the lens. Thus the 2 identical cameras. I was on a photo workshop. Took shots with both cameras-downloaded each card from each camera to my laptop and subsequently backed the images up on an external hard drive. SO I had all images safely stored that were taken that day. I put the cards back into their respective cameras to format and before I formatted checked one to see if I had successfully displayed the histogram (cameras were less than a month old and i was still getting to know them). When I went to display an image in the playback menu I got the message "Folder contains no images". Tried in the second camera with the other card and got the same message. I took the cards out, thinking could I have formatted these and not remembered...senior moment...NO, when I put them in the card reader in the laptop the images were there on each card. Took them out again and put them in the cameras and each said "Folder contains no images". Can anyone explain how this can happen? I do not use the folder option in either camera because I don't know how to- so there were no folders on either camera that I set up. After having 3 camera workshop colleagues see this so I knew it just wasn't me they were also shaking their heads. I subsequently reformatted the cards and they worked fine (both Sandisk cards). I could explain it as a camera glitch but these were two cards in separate identical cameras giving the same error message simultaneously...never happened before....any idea? The Nikon gremlin???

I've read all the replies to your question and don't think it has been answered (unless I missed something). When you put the cards (before formatting) back into the cameras, did you put the matching card into each one? I am asking only for the purpose of eliminating another factor in the mystery. I wish I had a ready answer for you. I wonder if the process of uploading the images adds or modifies any code to the image files.

I create a folder on my desktop and copy and paste the files to that folder. I don't use software to transfer the photos. This is the way I have been doing it for years and this has bever happened before.

If you use drag-and-drop (highlight the files in one folder and drag them to another) the default action is to move them. In order to copy them you need to hold the Ctrl key while dragging.

It's safer to just highlight the files in the source folder, right click and Copy, then click on the destination folder, right click and Paste.

This is for Windows. It may be different for Mac.

Since your card reader can see the images, they must still be there. Is your software set to delete them after uploading? As Mogul said, if the software deleted them, they were probably deleted only in terms of the camera seeing them. It looks like the software is telling the camera that the files have been deleted so the camera can write another thousand images to the card. The computer, on the other hand, uses a different system, so it can still see them.

I'm going to experiment with this.

EDIT: I took two pictures and uploaded them to my computer via the card reader. I put the card back into the camera and deleted them. When I put the card back into the card reader, the pictures were gone. So, deleting them in the camera makes them unavailable to camera and computer. Perhaps if the uploading software deletes them, the computer can still see them.

Try practising what you preach Moron! Mogul did use 'quote reply' to ask a question to a specific poster, why did you feel the need to interfere again. If you have nothing better to do, go try to sell some more crap on eBay!!

Are we here on the Hog really no smarter than a 4-year old who has to resort to name-calling because he doesn't have the vocabulary to say exactly what he/she means?

And is it really necessary to keep picking on the same person?
I too, have answered questions that were specifically asked of someone else, and others have answered questions that were specifically asked of me.
This is an OPEN forum and anyone is allowed to ask and/or answer any question he/she likes.
It would be so nice to have one day on the Hog without snarly remarks or name calling!
OK, enough preaching... for now!

Did you try this????

My memory is hazy on this. When I used to switch cards from my D70 to D300, I could not see pictures taken on one camera and see them on the other camera. I had to go into the menu system and tell the camera to show all pictures. Hope this helps. Also Nikon has a help phone line.

And I've been looking for another item: Where were the cards formatted? In-camera or by the computer?
Letting the computer format your cards is asking for trouble. Always format in-camera, AND in the camera that is going to use that card.
If that was done, please ignore this post.

Try taking pics with each camera then switch the cards, camera 1 to camera 2, camera 2 to camera 1 and see what happens, you may have put the cards back in opposite cameras not sure if this can cause this problem.

Just a thought. I'm not sure how your mem card was formatted or if you might have formatted it using your computer. If so try formatting your card using the format program in your camera. Over the years I have heard you should format the card in the camera not the computer. Compatibility differences between the two. Hope this might help.

Good shooting

What would happen if you downloaded the cards directly from the camera to the computer, omit the card reader? Just a thought

I just highlight, right click choose copy and right click in the folder and choose paste.

I always format in the camera. Even though both camera are D5100's I use the same card for each camera. I have a 16 gig for one and an 8 foir the other. I have no idea what happened.

That is what I do. A copy then a paste into the folder.
