I usually shoot wildlife and nature and am consistently at the 300mm end of my lens or I shoot close ups. So, I decided to lock my lens at 70mm and shoot more towards the middle of where I am comfortable shooting.

Talk about out of my element! I shot on manual with autofocus engaged (I have bad eyes). I was fine out in the light, but I went into the woods on days where it was cloudy and rainy and very windy. Most of my pictures were terrible (blurry).

I'm showing you 6 out of about 60. I think I'm going to do this for another week. I want to practice with getting the right settings under that low light and windy condition. I'm also going to move to about 80mm.

Thank you for doing this challenge. I am finding it challenging and I'm actually frustrated, but learning!

Looks like you did great! You have a lot of varied perspectives there.

Good going! and keep it up...we'll see you again next week.

How did you feel about it? Did you reach for your zoom ring at all? :)

Out of habit, yes I did reach for the zoom. Luckily I locked my lens ;). Then I had to move me! I really was uncomfortable, but also felt like I was learning.

Yesterday the winds were about 50mph and constant rain. My pics looks sharp on the screen, but when I uploaded them, they were not. I know the DOF was very shallow in a lot of them in order to get the shutter speed and light needed. I'd like to increase the depth of field and clarity. I'm going to go back to the same place and try it again.

Well, seeing as I'm a little under the weather and the doctor has advised me to rest, I only have one day's offering to submit. All these were taken on a cloudy, showery day. All shot on 'P', white balance set to cloudy, and at 55mm on the D5100 crop camera which is equal to about 82.5mm. That is a focal length I have never used. These are right out of the camera, no pp of any kind. What I have learned is that I am a zoom person. I don't have the ability to descend or climb hills to get a better shot; my knees will not let me. I have included an extra shot of a tree around the corner from me. I think it is the most beautiful tree I have ever seen. Sorry for the sign post; I don't know how to get rid of it. This was a fun challenge. I'm glad I participated; it helped me to know my limitations.

Nice shots photogirl...did you unconsciously grab for the zoom ring even once? :)

You live in a very pretty area for sure!

Thanks rpavich. No I did not grab for the zoom ring. I actually kept looking at the lense to see that it was set at 55. But I did do a lot of groaning about not being able to touch the zoom ring!

The area was Barkhamstead Reservoir up in Barkamstead,CT, about an hour from where I live. The bench was shot in Canton at an apple orchard and oh, how I wish I could have used my other zoom lense for that one. And of course, the tree is right around the corner of my house, prisoned in by electrical wires. When we set out, we were hoping to beat the weather, but that didn't happen. When I shot with my Nikon F I always had by A & B, haze, polarizing filters in my bag, but I have been kind of lazy about getting them all out and see if they'll fit on my new camera.

Thank you again, for thinking of this challenge. It was helpful.

Thanks John. But I guess that's it for the Reservoir. There was another tree that I noticed up there for the first time. It was a fir tree (I don't know the name) where the needles formed shapes like leaves and they actually were changing colors. I noticed the trees on the way up to the dam and made a mental note to stop on the way down to shoot the trees. And wouldn't you know it! There was this big old ugly tractor/trailer truck parked in the lot, impeding my view. There was no place to park on the road (fences, no parking signs etc.) and was too dangerous to even walk out into the road and he was right in the way of what I wanted to shoot. I took a shot anyway but not what I wanted.

Thank you, smcaleer. Even though it was a cold, damp day with showers, it didn't keep me from pressing that shutter release! I liked 3 & 5 also. If only I could have used my zoom...

Thank you for the interesting challenge. I had a 50mm that was always giving me problems. I finally replaced it but had never put it on the camera. This challenge got the lens on my camera and forced me to use it.

It was amazing how much I reached for the lens to find it not there. I also learned that some pictures are very difficult if not possible get.
