I do outdoor photography with portraits.
When it's bright I use a meter to meter the face, then I set a light about 20 feet away, from the side, at about chin level of the subject. Then I use a flash meter to set the flash at about one stop under first reading I took. This way the flash gives a nice fill light, it also brings out texture. I shoot the flash bare bulb.
Then in Lightroom I would use the brush tool and paint all of the metal. Lower the exposure on it to about what you did on the vignette. Then i would have added a slight vignette to bring the attention to the men.

Wonderful shot, Graham. The look of each makes them appear to be from three different generations - the mid-1800's on the left, the mid-1900's in the middle and present day on the right. A perfect picture in all respects.

I totally agree with JR1 comments on this photograph, you just want to look at it.

When do they meet, Graham...I might want to join their club. Do I have to bring my own chair and Coke and beer?

Super shot. ;-)

Re-edited with the brightness of the white shirt and metal shutter reduced. The white shirt was almost blown out so reducing the brightness too far makes it look a bit odd.

That's a great shot Graham. It's difficult editing the bright whites with the dark blacks. About the only way to make it any better would be to edit one photo for the darks, edit another for the brights, then take them into photoshop layers, put the one exposed for the dark areas on top, and then erase the bright areas to reveal the whites underneath. But that's cheating.

Thank you jim. I try to limit my PP to only things that could be done in a darkroom.

This looks perfect now, Graham. You got it just right! The brighter white shirt looked a bit clean and new to fit the tone of this photo.

I like this photo and with the white shirt. He has made an effort to wear a clean white shirt, even though it is far too big for him. In old film developing days I would have said it was printed on hard paper. I am not much of a people photographer, but occasionally one jumps out at me that I like and I enjoyed this one. Lovely shot full of character that holds the eye.

So do I. I miss the days of film and medium format cameras. Still have my Hasselblad's. Every once in a while I get them out and shoot a role, I don't think digital can stand up to them yet.

Yes a few times, but mostly busy playing in various bands at various venues. Great days, but didn’t they go by quick!
