Somehow I feel like I've been on another planet, even though I read the newsletter every day. What new forum are we talking about here? There are several forums on this site, and I do enjoy the ones that deal with my specialties. I also like the general ones. I seldom get many comments and my posts seldom end up in the newsletter. So I really appreciate those who do actually see my posts. I frequently just read the posts and not comment because what I would have said has already been said. I do think sometimes we're too quick with a "good job" when the work is actually pretty poor. Maybe helpful suggestions would be better? I do admit that although I've been a professional photographer for over 30 years I do feel a bit intimidated on this forum. I wonder if those who are so critical are actually as good as they want us to believe? But then that's just my cynicism talking! I've had people criticize my spelling instead of commenting on the photo posted - and I see so much misspellations on this site that I'm appalled. Maybe those types of comments would be better said in a PM.

As a Member that has never even posted, but does a quick check every day and sometimes follows a thread to the end, comments, etc.---I think this Forum is great. I not too long ago had to "downsize" from all my Nikon gear (40+ years with Nikon), kept my beloved LeicaM and it's glass, I have gotten many very helpful pieces of information about OLY, where I ended up with an EP3 first, then and EM5 and now going to the EM1;- learned on here that I can use every piece of my Leica glass with the OLYs...Hope you all stay with this forum and keep posting...(Shortly I'll start posting too) Thanks to all those who put in the time and effort to keep it all going. Luvmypets letter was very appropriate,- at least to me...
The gallery posts are endless. It takes about three minutes for a post to be buried on page 6. I believe that is why fewer posts are being made. It takes hours to go through the gallery and comment on even a fraction of them. But most people like their efforts to be noticed and appreciated, even if the efforts are not museum quality and may never be.
It is mho that the site is too large to accommodate all that need accommodating. However, I have no solution other than to divide it up as suggested, and let the members decide which sections to concentrate on.

Just a suggestion to help keep it simple while you are learning the ropes. Find a few people that you really like their work and put them on your buddy list. Then start watching what they post. Start commenting on their work and get to know them. This will keep it manageable. I follow a few sections and then watch my buddy list. Not everyday but once every few weeks I go through and see what they have posted that I have missed. It is a lot less overwhelming that way.
If you have a specific interest use the search feature.
Make sure you are posting also so we can get to know you.

See...learned something already today. I have never utilized the buddy list...wasn't sure what it was for. You clarified it for me. Thanks!
Great post! We should not tolerate rudenes in the forum to the same xtent we don't in life. These dudes must behave like that in their real lives, so let's bring the best in everyone as a community that values people and their efforts and show them how to behave with our words and actions. I have many times looked at a photo and not commented just to avoid something hurtful. I would like the favor returned when I am looked on that same light. Photography or knowledge of it should not be used to diminish others, on the contrary, let's enjoy it to enhance our experience and our lives.
I think the daily UGG blog is just wonderful. As an intermendiate photographer this is a learning tree for me. Thanks to all who respond to my and other knowledgable photographers

Good post. Like everywhere else....at work, within families, in the neighborhood...there is a broad range of personality types. I sometimes wonder if being anonymous, more or less, brings out suppressed character traits such insecurities turning to harsh criticism or bullying. As to spelling...we all have editor genes. I learned that years ago. Let the editors edit. I know I post misspellings almost always because I type on an iPad for this forum and it is very easy to slip in a misspelled word. Frankly, when I go back and read my posts I am appalled at my own carelessness. So if someone wanted to point it out, fine with me. Others in this world are just poor spellers. It doesn't mean that their thoughts are any less valid. We all need to take deep breaths and appreciate and use the forum for what it is....a really great information and sharing tool. (that last was a comment directed to everyone, not you specifically.)

I fully agree with you and that is why I support having new subdivisions. The gallery is like the freeway at rush hour, it would be a full time occupation to keep up with something there. I am relatively new here and it's been this way since I joined & since I don't like freeways, I don't post much on that section. I've considered the suggestion about selecting buddies but that feels kind of like facebook which I don't do.
Other photo forums have the same problems and have dealt with them by adding special sections. I find participation in smaller, more focused groups more engaging than piling into the traffic. I'm hoping thoughtful participants will help make this work here. Some folks like the freeway and others prefer the meandering backroads even if they're a little rough. It's OK for people to have choices. And if a few people get off the freeway to go on the backroads, the freeway may be less of a headache for those who continue to use it and everyone might be less frustrated.

Thank you for your comments! I certainly hope that the new gallery will lure people back and satisfy both sets of photographers.
I would like to urge everyone to please contact anyone you know that left and let them know what is taking place. Invite them back. Ask them to be patient for the new gallery and to let everything settle in place and see if they feel things are more to their liking. This is a great forum and I want to see a peaceful coexistence for everyone. I know you can't please everyone but I would hope a great majority will be.

Unfortunately many of those that have left will not come back, but there is no harm in asking them to. If they do they may very well find the new section is what they were looking for! I have been a member of quite a few forums and feel this is the best one I have joined so far.

Thank you for taking time to read my post. The new gallery is not up and running as far as I know. Things are still being worked out. If you will go into search and read Nightski's post "Dear Admin-we need a new gallery" you will see what is currently going on.
I have been in touch with Sandra on this quite a bit. I am sure I am not the only one. It is my understanding that the new section, the
General Critique Section, is to be placed right between Photo Gallery and Photo Analysis. The best way to see what is being proposed is to read her thread. I have posted the link to it below:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-158333-1.htmlI suggest you skim thru it and read her posts, this thread is now up to 18 pages! She has worked EXTREEMLY hard to get this started and hopefully it will work! This new section should do a lot to satisfy most members if they give it a chance! I know that no matter how hard it is tries everyone will never be satisfied, but this should help make this forum better than it was.
If everyone follows the rules that will be set up it should work, and help this forum become better. The hard part is going to get the members to give it a chance. Not to mention getting old members that left to come back and give it a chance also. If they chose to not come back it will be their lose.
One of the first things that needs to be done will be to satisfy existing members. PLEASE, everyone needs to give it a fair chance!

I am an amateur photographer, and have been a member for just a short time. I really appreciate this site, for the most part. I haven't contributed any of my photo's as of yet. I just enjoy reading the comments on the site, most being constructive, some not so much. Having said these things, I appreciate constructive criticism. Being hurtful is only tearing down not edifying (building up). It would be beneficial to those who are master photographers to remember they were where we are once. Understanding your camera and lens choices and taking many pictures is how you get better. Please be patient with each other. We are all at different stages in our development as photographers. Thank you

There are several regular poster who left before the new gallery was mentioned. Just before. Some left because of rude hurtful comments others because they were tired of the "good photo" comments given too freely. They are probably who you are missing.
I for one think as you do that there is room for both and I intend to post in both. I have found friends on here that I like to share things with, without getting a C&C. But there are other images that I would like help with and they tend to get buried in the gallery.
