Ok,this contest idea is very appealing to me. Will be looking for the announcement in UHH. I'm sure this has been mentioned also, but what about the image coming straight from the camera with zero edits?

I've read threads here on the 'hog about wanting that "do all" lens because their current line up of multiple zooms just isn't short/and/long enough to take a shot of everything they see in every instance....

I propose (to anyone who's game) that you pick a lens (if it's a prime lens) or pick a focal length on your favorite zoom..and tape it down so it won't move, and shoot that for a whole week...or shoot it ONLY for your next outing.

Get used to not trying to get "every shot you see"...the fact is...you miss all kinds of shots...that's just life.

Using only one lens forces you to change positions...change angles...get low, get high....get creative, to pay more attention to the light instead of swapping lenses...to wring more out of that focal length than you otherwise might have.

What do you think? Are you up for it?

If you are....you can post a few of your results here...I'd be interested in seeing how you did and how you adjusted to the idea.

If you have only criticism or want to complain about how mean I am...then move on...I'm not interested in bickering with you here.

I already do this quite often. While my "normal" walk around lens is a Canon 15-85 mm, depending on my mood and where I'm going, I often use my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for a whole day's shooting. It does change my perspective and what I shoot considerably. I also find I take fewer pictures and spend more time on composition.

No...this isn't a contest...it's just a suggestion for those who are used to zoom lenses to try using one focal length for a week or more to get used to using the other tools at their disposal rather than zooming...framing, composition, light, etc...

It's just for fun..edit your images however you want...I'm just interested in hearing what you thought of going from zoom to prime...and how it affected your shooting.

ahhhh.... Thanks for the clarification. I still think it would be a good contest :) I have come to enjoy shooting primes over zooms for all the reasons stated. About to go on a photo walk at the river with an old 200 mm nikkor prime. Having no autofocus makes it even more of a special outing.

Well...then you're already a convert...lol...I'm targeting this at those who use zooms and have never broken out of their comfort zone...:)

I shoot med format and 4x5 film so I'll stay out because there's no way to tell if I cheat. I do this all the time, but I will check back because this has peaked my interest. Good Shooting to All

I realise that this isn't what you had in mind, but I've spent the day in town with only my 8mm lens. Obviously this type of lens has its limitations. One of the advantages however is that you can get close enough to your subject, without having a load of people in the way. This comes in handy when in an urban environment and a telephoto zoom just won't help in that situation. Would I want to restrict myself to this one lens? No. Would I want to restrict myself to any one prime lens? No. Would I want to restrict myself to a collection of prime lenses? No, not even for a week, I'd be forever changing.

Anyone? :)
I am....how long do we have? Do you have a final date in mind? Thought the JR1 post was hilarious, LOL!! I've got a 50mm prime, so that's my go to.

I've done this before and continue to do this from time to time. It's a very good exercise both photographically, as well as physical. Sometimes one has to walk/hike to the best vantage point for the photo one wants to take.

Add to that, the final image has to be the full frame, no cropping. Mentally, this is also challenging, as it forces one to think and compose in the camera.

We are talking about discipline here. You will see me often using my 1963 Nikon F with a prime lens, in this case an old 50mm f1.4 and a hand held exposure meter. When I do that I "zoom" with my feet and I do what I used to when film was more prevalent, select my subjects very carefully.
This view of the Miami buildings was made late in the evening, when there were still light colors in the sky. I used my Nikon F loaded with Fujifilm 200 set to ISO 160 on my Manfrotto tripod with a Linhof ballhead. I used my Minolta meter for the exposure, which I regret I cannot remember what it was.

Well, originally I had a week in mind.

the idea is that you use one focal length instead of reaching for the zoom knob....you are forced to make all your shots more creatively because a huge part of your "arsenal is now taken away."

You can take a few extra days if you want...there are really no rules...just come back in a week or so with your top 5 shots and some thoughts about how it made you shoot/think differently.

Well...(and i say this with the utmost respect) I'm not looking for your shots....lol.

I'm targeting those who use zooms...I'm not even going to post my own shots...I'm a prime user so no need for me to do the exercise.

I was looking for those who are "zoomers" and who, upon taping their zoom to one focal length, will be forced out of their comfort zone.

I was interested in what they got for images and how it made them feel and how it changed their shooting style.

The people that already shoot primes?...well...this thread isn't for them :)
