I started to type in another "this is what I do, so it's also what you should do" comment but then changed my mind. My advice: go to a reputable camera store that has used cameras and get the feel for other cameras. Or, better yet, find a camera club, join it, and ask other people if you can look at their cameras. Get opinions from people in a context where you can immediately ask a follow-up question, see the work that comes out of the other cameras, and constantly remind yourself what you want to do with the new gear.

BTW, if you check my website http://www.photosbygreenwood.com you'll see images taken by a Nikon 8008, N90, D1, D200, D300S, and D800E, and Canon G-12. In the end, it's mostly about you, not the camera. Good luck.

Thank you. We do travel as much as we can. Life's too short to dance with ugly partners, and we think sitting still is a very ugly partner. Our daughter works at Davidson College, near you, so I should be adding some NC images soon.

The D300 is a fine camera, and a significant upgrade from D70.

Although the D300 certainly isn't the newest model, it is very capable. Some people will tell you that any camera over 3 years old is useless technology, but this just isn't true. Not with the D300 anyway.

I could not be more in agreement. The D300 is an excellent tool with one of the best AF systems made so far by Nikon. In the second hand market the camera can be bought for $500 or less depending on condition.
I still use my D70s for two important reasons to me, it can sync flash at 1/500sec, not achievable with any modern camera and it has the gorgeous pastel like colors of the first generation colors that I like so much. Its sensor, the same sensor in the D40, is excellent in good light and I never felt limited with its 6 megapixels.
New cameras have incredible technology, nobody can deny that but these old models do very well indeed if it fits the photographer style at prices that are very hard to beat.

Davidson is maybe 15-20 miles north of Charlotte and an excellent university. I use to go up there for track meets to photograph the athletes. I remember once photographing the shot put event, they were using an 18 lb. ball. I'm a stong guy but couldn't even pick it up with one hand, those guys were monsters.

I upgraded from the Nikon D200 to the D300 about a month back and have never regretted it. The D300 is much superior to the D200 in almost every way. I have used the D300 with a 35mm 2.8 lens and was able to shot without flash indoors with ISO 400~800 and at night and never took the ISO past 1600. The noise at 1600 was not bad at all and after using Paintshop Pro X6 and Topaz DeNoise you would never know it was ever there. Read up on the D300 and you will find it a fantastic camera that can be had for around $650 body only. Don't let people tell you because the D300 is 5+ years old it is no longer worthy of consideration. The D300s added video, extra button on the back for live view and dual memory slots ( Compact and SD ) but is essentially still a D300.

Is the D300 still in production? I thought it had been replaced by the D300s.

The mountains should be nice this time of year, lots of waterfalls, streams, etc. NC is a georgeous state my family has lived here fo almost 300 years, so I'm kinda biased.

I have had my D300 for several years and love it. This is an addicting and expensive hobby, isn't it? I am a novice but you can see some of my work at www.Pbase.com/rook185. I use a Nikon 70-200mm VR lens with it most often but am having some issues with my set-up in that the AF will suddenly stop working. I need to contact Nikon to see what is going on.

The D300 has been discontinued, but you can still buy a new D300s for around $1300.00

I got the D7100 over the D7000 just for the improvements over the D7000. I had a D300 for 5 yrs and I do miss the full metal frame but I love the upgrades that come with the D7100. Some times I crop some photos down and it is nice to have 24mp to start with vs 12 or 16mp.

The D300 was removed from Nikon's product line up on Sept 11th 2009. The D300s still shows as "current", at least on Nikon UK's website.

Nice to see so many aficionados coming out of the woodwork !

Hello, fellow clickers, I have been using a Nikon D70 since the late 90's and want to upgrade and was thinking of the D300. I hope to eventually go to something like the D600 but for now the D300 would be a big step up. Thanks.

It would be a step up , but you are buying real old technology. Unless someone is giving you a D300, don't waste your money.

Your D300 must have a shutter count of 50,0000 or so, but that is a good thing.

Hey rafferelljr - looks like this thread's beginning to go the way most go when so many different opinions abound !

Perhaps you could let us know if you've come to any purchase conclusions ...... so that I for one can decide whether I still want to "watch".

Old technology isn't necessarily bad technology. The D300 shoots some pretty good pictures.
