Hello, fellow clickers, I have been using a Nikon D70 since the late 90's and want to upgrade and was thinking of the D300. I hope to eventually go to something like the D600 but for now the D300 would be a big step up. Thanks.

I have a D300S, and think the only difference is that the "S" model has video capability which I never use. If you're shooting with relatively good light, the D300 remains a great camera. It gets a bit noisy at ISO 1600 and higher, so if you're shooting in marginal light I'd recommend at least looking at the D7000 as well.

Thank you, all for your comments. My goal is to develope a web site and have alot of stock photos mainly of landscape, nature and animal photos, etc. Hiking and pitcure taking, however at 62 it may be more like driving and picture taking. It looks like the general idea is the D7000, what about a used D700 or new D600? Thanks.

The D300 is a nice camera--but yes there are newer models. If your eventual goal is something like the D600, I'd just make the jump and deal with the learning curve. The choice will influence your choice of lenses because the D600 is fullframe and the D7000 is not...or another option is a used D700 which IS fullframe-- also older....

Sorry...started this before the other posts....

The D300 is a fine camera, and a significant upgrade from D70.

Although the D300 certainly isn't the newest model, it is very capable. Some people will tell you that any camera over 3 years old is useless technology, but this just isn't true. Not with the D300 anyway.

Don't be fooled by "latest and greatest" but go for the camera that will do for you what you want it to do.

These were taken earlier this year with D300 and Sigma f2.8 lenses. Plenty good enough for the likes of little me !

For me at the present the D300 is a good choice. Someday, if the D600 isn't that capable the maybe the D800, but only until I can afford it by making money with the D300. Thank everyone, your honesty is king.

Me too! Thank you, the color saturation is fantastic. If I can record photos as good as these with a D300, I'm there.

Just to help shed true experience on the D600 debacle, the one I bought had some oil spots on the sensor, so I sent it back to Nikon. They fixed it, and it's not had a repeat.

Like all DSLR cameras, it does get some dust on it from time to time, and I simply clean it. It has been discontinued, and many of the channels don't have it available any more, but the D610 should now be in the channels.

Nonetheless, I'm a satisfied D600 user.

BTW, I do agree with your perception that the D300 is older technology. The OP would be better positioned with the D7000/D7100.

Thanks ! But take note of the lenses used as well. The 17-50 comes highly recommended by Thom Hogan (http://www.bythom.com/Sigma17-50mm_lens_review.htm) and is a DX lens. There are some here who'll say "only get an FX lens". The "here and now" is what I'm interested in, and this lens works for me ! The other lens is an FX lens.
