Ok, I admit, I usually have a zoom lens on my camera, so I'll play along, and use just my 85mm for the week. We're to post the photos this Friday? In this thread?

True...leave that 85mm on there all week and choose the best 5 from wherever you've gone and taken images...

Hopefully it's gotten you a bit uncomfortable more than a few times by Friday.... :)

I say let's try for a week at first. Post the photos on Friday (I can't do Saturday since I only have dial-up at home, therefore do not use the internet unless it's an emergency). Then, in another week or two, do the challenge again for 2 weeks.
This could get very interesting.....

:D

you left us with a lot of leway, one lens, one camera. my first thought was my sony a-850 aand a sony dt 16-80 cz lens. but it could be any lens from 28-400mm. in my early days all i had was a 50mm fixed lens voitlander plus a flash, i made it for 4 years with that outfit. so in the spirit of your challange, i'll go with the sony a-850 plus the 50mm dt f 1.7.

Well...I MEANT one FOCAL LENGTH for a week instead of a "do-all-zoom"....context is king. :)

I've read threads here on the 'hog about wanting that "do all" lens because their current line up of multiple zooms just isn't short/and/long enough to take a shot of everything they see in every instance....

I propose (to anyone who's game) that you pick a lens (if it's a prime lens) or pick a focal length on your favorite zoom..and tape it down so it won't move, and shoot that for a whole week...or shoot it ONLY for your next outing.

Get used to not trying to get "every shot you see"...the fact is...you miss all kinds of shots...that's just life.

Using only one lens forces you to change positions...change angles...get low, get high....get creative, to pay more attention to the light instead of swapping lenses...to wring more out of that focal length than you otherwise might have.

What do you think? Are you up for it?

If you are....you can post a few of your results here...I'd be interested in seeing how you did and how you adjusted to the idea.

If you have only criticism or want to complain about how mean I am...then move on...I'm not interested in bickering with you here.

An old idea that is a classic challenge and test of a photographers personal (versus technical) prowess. I have never seen one of these exercises that has been anything other than a powerful learning experience, particularly as it relates to the person (versus equipment). You can go so fas as limiting ISO, aperture or shutter speed (or even two of the three) It is an exercise that should be resurrected often. Great idea, Bob!

Thanks Mogul!

It's already Tuesday and I haven't taken a shot! Hopefully I'll get out somewhere before Friday! :)

Great idea, I am assuming you mean Friday Nov 1st not Friday Nov 8th.

John Sexton started his career this way, for 20 years he only had one 4x5 camera and a 150mm lens. I also remember a quote "If you need more than one lens, you are not a photographer"

I once shot wedding this way with a 50mm on my 35mm body, it was the best wedding I ever did.

My main lens that is always on the camera is a DX 35mm f1.8. I carry along with me a 105mm 2.8. Most amateurs could not take a picture if they did not play zoom first. I have 6 other prime lens from 17mm to 300 mm for special needs. Do not have a zoom lens anymore.

Lol...no...the idea is to NOT use a zoom lens... :)

The idea is that if you normally have a zoom on your camera...and you are used to framing via twisting that zoom dial...that you put a prime on your lens for a whole week..and get used to seeing and using only one focal length...

Make more sense now?

Any "one focal length" lens is ok...lol.

The idea is that IF you normally use zooms...that you get out of your comfort zone and shoot with only one focal length...that will force you to make do with what you have and concentrate on framing, composition and light, rather than twisting the zoom dial to frame...

Well...then no need to post any images or take part..this is mainly for zoom users to get used to the "one focal length" idea...if you are already doing that...then it's just a wasted exercise.

PS: I'm an amateur and I don't own a zoom lens...broad characterizations not only aren't accurate, they aren't helpful either...
