I have not found that at all on this site. I was very timid at first about asking for help and finally asked some very elementary questions and received nothing but positive help and replies. The members here have been very helpful to me

Are expletives, even though thinly veiled, necessary to this discourse?

you lose your manual you get a new one. lensinc.com you can download them in pdf form for free. if you have a nikon go to nikonusa.com go to downloads, it will have the manuals to film and digital cameras, lenses, flashguns and ascssesories. I guess im old school if im interested in a new hobby, i check it out and research it, go to the library and pick up a basic text on say fundamentals of golf. get familiar with the terms and how the game is played before talking to a golfer.

Nothing wrong with old school, I went to the same school it only becomes a problem when we expect others to adopt our approach and refuse to allow them to choose the approach that works for them.

Libraries are a good source of information provided they are funded to do so.
Since the carrot-on-a-stick mandates, which the government promised to fund, are now pushed onto the states many library essentials have been deleted.
Large well to do city libraries may have up to date material, but the smaller ones are woefully behind in keeping up with technology books.
So if you tell somebody to go to the library for his/her Canon Nikon or whatever, more than likely the latest book will be 5 years old or more.
Now then...you tell me, what's more up to date...the library or the internet (including UHH) ?

Ok... I gave up reading all the responses in this thread around page 6 because its not giving me any information on photography at all. I don't even know why this thread was started... I mean whats the purpose of it? I've been a member for only two months now and have gazillion questions I want to ask, but I'm taking my time, reading some books, google-ing every word or term that I'm not familiar with and taking some intro classes. When the time is right and I'm ready to understand the answers - than I can shoot some questions. In the mean time I read the forum almost every day and learn a lot from it! The only thing I wish this site had is a Search option so you can find previous posts on things that interest you.
Thank you all UHH members for the time and patience you put into making this forum a friendly place where you can learn first hand from the best!

Regards,
HD

If you click on the "search" button at the top of this page that might help.

I think if you are frustrated by a question ask then pass it over move on to a new topic. There is never a need for sarcastic reply's. It only makes the responder look follish in the end.

I guess everyone is entitled to there own opinion. It seems to me that the first step in learning is to ask questions. One can easily be directed to a book or website if necessary. The question can also be ignored by those who whish to do so, no harm no foul.
What influanced me to join this forum was the knowledge base and supportive nature of the group.
I am still more in the learning mode than a teaching mode, so maybe that influanced my opinion. I hope to learn more every day.

The first step to learning is to take responsibility and open the manual and read about the topic. If that doesn't totally answer the question, try Google or You Tube. There are a lot of tutorials out there. I learned by studying book and taking courses. Do not ask others to do your work.

One major problem with manuals from the manufacturer is that they are no longer on paper (except for the "quick start" ) they are on CD. If you are out taking pictures and don't have your laptop or smart phone handy (I've put my manual on my smart phone) you are just out of luck. If your camera has been around for a little while (and isn't brand new like the sx40) there are people who will sell you a printed copy for $15. It drives me up a wall that the manufactures force you to find a computer to read the instructions on how to use their product.

I can understand why a newbie would ask, what seems elementary to some, a simple question. I used to sell cameras. Now this was back in the 80's. I don't remember the exact camera, but in the manual it said "aperature" opn one page, "lense opening" on another page, then later said "f-stop". My customer was totally confused. I always told them no matter how many times you asked, I would help you find the answer.
I find that to be true here also. Everyone has been a big help to me with comments and referring to other sources.

Now, lets get back to taking photos of interest and having a cup of coffee with each other.
