Hello, I'm new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself.
I'm a guitar player and instructor by trade and now trying to learn to shoot better videos for online instruction and demo's of music products.
I joined also to learn and get advice, i'm trying to decide to buy a d7000, or a 300s to shoot video for products and guitar demo's in a 10x10 controlled room. I'm trying to be budget continuous and would really like to have the d600 or the d7100 but thought i could start with a used camera to learn at the same time. I sold my sony a65 recently because of the file format issue. Now i'm looking to buy a Nikon. Thanks for any help.

I am missing something.
Why are your video productions limited to the control room?
This could only be the result of a live performance.

Go to
http://www.creativelive.com and look for their session on using a DSLR for video It ran for two full days. I think the live broadcast finished running, but it will be rebroadcast - for free. You can also buy it - $99, I think.

A refurb of either would save you quite a bit. Also, consider ebay.

I do videos of gigs for small bands and will never use a DSLR only my Panasonic 3mos camcorder. Remember DSLRs are also limited to about 30 minutes recording as the chip overheats
My D3200 is limited to 20. I shoot a lot of video at reunions and family gatherings and only use the DSLR for photos. I'll have three or four video cams working at the same time.
When you say file format problem, was the H256 file format.

Hi Mike
Welcome to the forum.
I cannot comment on Nikon but I do know that Karl Taylor - professional photographer - shoots his teaching videos in HD on Canon DSLR's. Also film companies use Canon DSLR's a lot on action pics such as fixed to cars.

You are trying to get ahead of yourself. Everyone wants to purchase an expensive camera thinking it will take better pictures before you learn the basics of photography. What do you know about Focal length, ISO, Depth of field, zoom lenses, prime lenses, megapixels, manual operation, aperture, shutter operation, exposure, lighting and a long list of others features that a new camera will have. You take the picture, not the camera. If you do not know the basics and how to operate it, you will be disappointed in the results.

If budget is a big factor, have you considered an inexpensive Video camera, since it seems you wish to end-up with video? Less expensive than those still cameras you mention.

If you need to take videos, then purchase a video camera, they are cheap enough these days and are designed for that specific purpose.[/quote]
Amen to that! Unless the DSLR part for stills is very important, you are much better off with a good video camera.

Mike, I think what most are trying to tell you including myself. Don't buy a DSL for a video, you buying it as a camera, the video side of it is only an added feature that gives the option to shoot video should you so need it.
I do a fair amount of video, but for some reason I just haven't figured out how to frame a video and hang it on the wall. LOL. I do have videos that I have taken of sunsets on Cape Cod, flowing steams, waves rolling in on the ocean side. But for the most part there on DVD and used when I'm sitting in my RV in the middle of a desert out there in there Southwest Thinking of the every back home taking there winter beatings.
Buy a camera as a Camera not for the video side of. You will be far more happy with it. Good Luck and enjoy your hobby. Just My Two Cents. Bill

Yes, that is true BUT, however they will all only have an LCD screen for viewing and I haven't found one yet where you can actually see what you are filming when there is any sort of light shining on it. Its point and shoot and hope you are pointing in the right direction and level. None of them have a viewfinder. Also handholding at arms length to view the screen is not good for steady shots.
If you want one with a viewfinder then they cost nearly double that of a video capable DSLR.
