If you buy it by credit card..a lot of the credit card companies will extend the warranty on major purchases so before you drop the cash check with your credit card company

Hi,
I purchased a Nikon D5100 with a kit lens for $519.00 CDN
7 days ago and have the option of getting an extended warranty through the store for $75.00
This will extended the two year Warranty on the body to five years.
It covers not having to return it to Nikon,
just need to drop it off at a store. If it happens more then twice they replace the camera...

I googled "Nikon D5100 problems" the only major problem that came up was faulty shutter not opening and people having to send in the camera often more then once.
these posts were from people posting in 2012, not many in 2013. any idea if the problem was fixed in the manufacturing since 2012?

Should I get the extended warranty? What do most people do when buying a new camera?

Glen

Almost all, if not all, extended warranties are a rip off although on a new car, if they will bargain down to half price, and only if, it can be worthwhile.

Most items fail within the first few months if they have some kind of defect. That is covered under the normal warranty. I never buy extended warranties and hear people who work in finance and consumer affairs say don't buy them.

99% of the time I do not go for the extended warranty but I just got a refurbed D7100 and got a extended warranty for only 35.00. I think 75.00 is not much for a little extra piece of mind as long as you trust the seller.

About thirty years ago, I purchased a microwave oven for my mother-in-law. It was about $180 dollars and the sales person wanted me to buy an extended warranty for about $200. When I told him I wasn't interested, he had about three other warranties he could sell me, each one was less money. To make a long story short, I don't know who has the oven now, but it was passed thru the family for at least twenty years and never had a problem. In most cases if a problem does occur, it will happen during the first year, and in most cases the manufacturing company will have that covered with their warranty.

From the very first time I was offered extended warranty, I asked how much it would be, declined, then went home and put that amount of money in my savings account. When a few years ago, my computer crashed, I bought a new one using the cash from that account - and had money left over!!!
Still doing the same thing today, I have in fact become my own insurer. Not just for photography and computers, but anything extended warranty is offered for.

I agree with Esther! I save the money of extended warranties.
When possible, I also try to buy an expensive item from Costco since they double the warranty on many electronic items at no exta cost.

It's a roll of the dice.If most people came out ahead with them, the companies couldn't afford to sell them.every consumer publication i have read recomends not to buy them. But again you have to play the odds.

I did get a Mack Camera Guarantee once. The appeared to be worth it at the time.

WAL,

It would depend on which Mack warrantee you bought. If memory serves me right Mack sells two different warrantees.

Read my post above and look at the link I posted. The "diamond" covers a lot that the manufacture does not cover which is the reason I got it. Look at what is covered:

http://www.adorama.com/IMXWD5000.html

The two cleanings alone are worth more than I paid.

Jim D

NOTE: I only paid about 1/2 of what they show the charge is. After settling on the price of the item you can debate about the charge of the warrantee. On big ticket items you can normally bargain about the price, but do everything separately.

It depends on your financial situation. In my case, if I had a body that costs a few hundred dollars.. I would pass.. a days work could easily cover the repair or replacement.. chances are it won't need it but you never know. Its like buying car insurance and never needing to make a claim. $75 is a dinner with my wife or a fill up for my truck... so definatly that money can go to something else. I only have the extended coverage on my 1dx and 5dm3... and I did have to send my 1dx in... I got the coverage cuz I would hate having to replace one of those bodies.
So weigh in how much $75 is worth to you now and if worse comes to worse will you be able to buy a new body at moments notice if the extreme were to happen to your current equipment.

I have just looked at my normal house and insurance policy. Like most of yours I suspect do to, it covers all the accidental damage stuff that posters keep referring to and there are no time limitations to it either, so I ask, how many are paying a second time for insurance they already have. There is a vast difference between an extended warrantee and damage cover. I would always seek accident and damage cover, but never an extended warrantee.

I have an extended warranty for my 5100 and 5200, I have already taken advantage of the warranty on my 5100 - which had a shutter problem.

Hi,
When did you purchase the 5100, there was a shutter problem with the D5100 for the 2012 manufactured models.

When did you send it in for repair? How long after buying did it have shutter problems?

Glen

What a great Idea, Most extended warranties are just a way for stores to make more money.
