Hi,
I purchased a Nikon D5100 with a kit lens for $519.00 CDN
7 days ago and have the option of getting an extended warranty through the store for $75.00
This will extended the two year Warranty on the body to five years.
It covers not having to return it to Nikon,
just need to drop it off at a store. If it happens more then twice they replace the camera...

I googled "Nikon D5100 problems" the only major problem that came up was faulty shutter not opening and people having to send in the camera often more then once.
these posts were from people posting in 2012, not many in 2013. any idea if the problem was fixed in the manufacturing since 2012?

Should I get the extended warranty? What do most people do when buying a new camera?

Glen

Hi, br I purchased a Nikon D5100 with a kit lens f... (show quote)

With the cost being approx.. 12% of purchase and if it included cleanings when needed, I would. If the camera needs repaired it would have to go to Nikon since Nikon does not sell many parts outside of themselves anymore. Freight alone could eat this up. Read the fine print before you jump. If the cleanings are not included I would pass.

From the very first time I was offered extended warranty, I asked how much it would be, declined, then went home and put that amount of money in my savings account. When a few years ago, my computer crashed, I bought a new one using the cash from that account - and had money left over!!!
Still doing the same thing today, I have in fact become my own insurer. Not just for photography and computers, but anything extended warranty is offered for.

Esther,
That is exactly how I have done it in the past, play the odds.
If say you buy 100 items that have been offered extended Warranty on in your life time, but you don't take the warranty and only say 10 of them need repair you are probably a head. That's a 10% failure rate.
So 100 items at average $75.00 each for warranty= $7500.00
The cost to repair the 10 items, lets say $75.00 for shipping and another $200.00 for repair= $2750.00 a savings of $4750.00 over you life time

Repairs can be very expensive ....... even the simplest would cost more than 75 bucks think of it as 25 per year damned if you do damned if you dont . I ve done it for both my d7000 and D800E cameras have moving parts ( shutters, flash etc) alot of buttons ,dials ,switches electonics , as well as doors and covers. Cameras go thru alot of lens changes and possible abuse/weather conditions bumps etc if your an active shooter. In my book this warrants the safety net !!

I just looked at Nikon Canada's website and looked at their
Address location for Camera repairs. It is about a 1/2 hour drive from were I live, so I could drop off my camera if it ever needs warranty repair. HUM.... I purchased the camera in the same vicinity as the Nikon repair location.
So no big benefit to dropping it off for repair to the store.

Here is what is offered:
-Anti lemon protection if item is in need of repair twice they replace it.
-90day exchange for defects they will replace it in the first 90 days.
-30 day price protection match competitors sale price.
-global coverage
-waiver Shipping and handling Save $15.00
-transferable to new owner
-20% off of at-fault repairs for 5 years

there doesn't appear to be any camera cleaning included.
And the fine print states that it does not cover Shipping, duty or brokerage fees.

No I cant say i have as of yet. My guess is you are dealing with Henrys ?? If you are - concerning the price match - On just about every camera item I have purchased - Bodies , lens/ flash /grip etc Ive shopped around online for sales at competitors (must be Canadian ) and they have priced match everytime !! Vistek runs alot of sales and they always match or better the price !!! Im in southern ontario - use the Windsor store. When i got the D7000 they price matched - saving me 200$ a couple of weeks later i saw it for an additional 50$ cheaper they honoured that. My Henry's store has been awesome for me !! All in all the price matching has more than paid for my extended warranties !!!

Yes Henrys. I always go online and check prices first and bring in the price for Henry's to match. Noticed my camera is now being sold for $20..00 less at Camera Canada, but not sure it is worth the drive 1/2 hour each way to get $20 back. Prob spend close to ten of it in gas LOL

How hard on your equipment are you?
How important is $75.00 to you?
Me, I never buy extended an extended warranty. The money I've saved over the years on the various products purchased will more than cover any problem I run into.

I beleieve when it comes to extended warranties there is no Blanket decision it all depends on the item ,your usage, cost etc. like any purchase - due diligence is required !!!

Warranty's are like insurance policy's: You are betting something will happen, they are betting nothing will.
I have never purchased an extended warranty. Even when I had my own business and folks asked about extended warranty's, I said this: "If the product I am selling you will need an extended warranty, then I am looking for a better product to sell".

I worked for Sears when extended warranty's first came out. We got 1/2 of the warranty for selling it. Sears still came out way ahead. Cameras are not washing machines but think the it's about the same deal. I know if I bought a warranty everytime it was offerd I would be severel thousand in the hole. Esther has the right idea. Just My Not So Humble Opinion. - Dave
