Whether using the USB cable directly from your camera, or using a card reader, once the images are on your computer do you disconnect the camera or card reader by using the "safely remove device" on your computer?
If that doesn't solve the problem, you could try closing Windows Explorer, wait a minute or so, then open it again and see if you can delete your images then.

I've tried that, Esther. I have even rebooted with no luck. Thanks for your input.

Can you access DOS via the command line?

I use a PC, currently Windows 7. I put my card in the reader, open Windows Explorer, sue that to access the card which shows under Computer by as Nikon D7100.

I then click on that, open the file and see my images. I highlight them all and then I go to Edit, Copy. After doing so, I access the file into which I want to place the images, click on that and then Edit, Paste; the images are then copied into that file. I then remove the card from the reader and format it.

I can only speak for my method using Canon software, I assume Nikon has similar, insert card in reader, Zoom Browser from Canon opens, on initial use tell it where to put the files, hit download, if desired there is a button to automatically clear the card after transfer, never had a problem, I do not look at the files until they are on my computer and usually not until a backup has been made to another drive. No problems this way.
Bob.

I have a similar thing when I try to delete or rename a particular photo after I've worked on it in PS Elements. Then, if I close-down Elements, I can make the changes. Is it possible you may have to close or exit your 'chip' in order to make changes to the photo that came from the storage card? Might we worth a test... Remove the card, then see if the same problem persists.

Thanks, everyone. I'm going to take a few disposable shots this morning when I make my daily trip into the "civilized" world and try a few of your suggestions. There are several I think might work. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

The easiest solution I have found to transfer images to my HP computer is to open the card up using a card reader for SD cards (my HP has one built in) and then using Windows Explorer, MOVE (not copy) the images to my external hard drive that houses my RAW images. Works every time without any failures. If I just want to look at the shots first before moving, I use a wonderful little free program called Faststone image viewer to view and then close it out and do the transfer.

I use Win7 Pro and Picassa for most editing. For transferring pix I use a Card Reader plugged into a USB port and COPY the pix to a Folder in MY Pictures. Picassa in turn automatically copies the new Pix into its database where they can be edited. When editing is completed Picassa will allow the pix in My Pictures folder to be updated to the edited versions thereby creating a duplicate backup to the now edited Picassa files. This leaves the original Pix on the SD card which can then be either deleted by the camera delete function or retained in any of a verity of storage methods. This procedure has been working for me for quite some time. Hope it helps you.

Have you tried opening the dated folder and deleting images one by one? Perhaps this will tell you whether there is just one image considered open by Windows. If that is the case, move it elsewhere, close it and see whether this allows you to delete the dated folder.

Thank you all. As I said, I shot a few test pics when I was out this morning. Loaded them into My Pictures folder with Adobe Bridge. I have a folder in My Pictures which I use as a temporary resting place for images which I'm working on, or haven't decided if they're keepers, or whatever. I opened the transfer folder along with the temporary folder and dragged the images one by one into the temp folder. Then deleted the transfer folder. Worked like a charm. It makes sense to me. I didn't make any copies, therefore no copies can be open----anywhere.......Thanks again, everyone!!!!!

Windows has a free app that will check one drive and then send it to another drive. I can take my pictures on the C drive and tell sync toy Take all my photos and copy them to a photos file on drive F or any drive you chose. If you add pictures to drive C at a latter time Sync Toy will look for them and back up just the new pictures.

Really good for backing up you photos. And the best part it's free. Just go to Microsoft and look for the sync toy download.

I didn't have this problem until I started using Win 8. Sometimes I have to boot to Safe Mode and then delete it. Other times I can just reboot and then I can delete it. This is a known issue with no solution that I'm aware off. And of course the error message never tells you which program has the photo open. But in reality most of the time the photo is not open in another program which is why it's so frustrating.

I had the problem win With Win 7 and 8. You would think the folks who program all those Windows updates would address the issue. At least by dragging the images to their destination folder, the need to make copies is eliminated. It's simple and you know without a doubt that it's a computer error. I've done this a couple of times and so far it's worked with no problem.

That's what I do. Or at least I open a window for MY Pictures, create new folder as needed, then I open a window for the inserted SD card. I select the desired photos, hold Control/right click files desired and select copy. Move mouse to desired folder in MY Pictures, right click, then paste.

Your problem may be that you removed your SD card without "Right clicking on the SD folder and left clicking "Eject SD" That could leave the file open causing the error when you reinsert the card.

I don't have time to read all of the posts to this so sorry if this is a duplicate answer.

If you opened one of the pix in a photo editor such as Photoshop you might get this message--- assuming that pic was the last pic you opened from that folder. To avoid this open another pic from a different folder.
