When I transfer images to my computer using the chip the images are transferred in a dated folder in the pictures folder. After moving the wanted images to the My Pictures folder, I sometimes go back to delete the dated transfer folder and get an error message telling me it cannot be deleted because one of the images is open somewhere else. Sometimes the unwanted folder deletes and other times it's next to impossible to get rid of it. I can't find it open in any of my files. Can anyone tell me how to avoid this?

Some people that know about this stuff may be reluctant to say without the type of computer and chip.
Did you look at the files before transfer?
That program may come on automatic when you open one photo but need to be turned off.
Here is my though if it were Windows.
Open the file, open one picture click to edit, the computer will take open the exportation of the entire file and asked you if you want to erase the chip after it is imported. Click yes.

It is Windows, but I have never been asked if I want to erase the chip after opening and editing an image. If I open the image and edit, I usually rename and save the edited image in the dated file before exporting it. The other alternative would be seem to be opening the image for editing in Photoshop and then saving it in the desired destination file.

I never moved images from a chip. what kind is it and what make model of PC ?
Most people talk about SD cards.
Somebody here will know. :-)
If want to edit just one image I'd need to drag/copy it onto the desk top separating it from the SD card so it wont get suck dry. :(

Sorry, it is an SD card. And I have 2 computers, both HP. One is running Windows 8 and the other Windows 7. I have had this problem on both computers.

Jimjay,

What camera are you using? Are you using the camera software to download the pictures? Are you downloading the SD card from the camera or from a card reader?
So many questions, so little time I know but before I can give you a good answer I got to have more Info.

You could try hitting Control, Alt, and Delete at the same time and see what applications are running when it says that. Then from there you can stop the app.

Fair winds

Close any photo software you have open including any that detects the sd card in the computer. That should fix the problem.

PS. Many of us have corrupted SD cards before.
We advise to always use the device/camera to reformat the card, not deleting it with the PC. Even going so far as the using the USB port for transfer and never removing the card. :)

That drives me crazy because I'll sometimes have an image open in more than one program. What you have to do is close any program that you used to access the image and then try to delete. Sometimes that hasn't worked for me, either, and I just have to wait.

Windows is pretty smart about protecting your data. If you use an application to open a file (whether it's an image or a database file or a Word document), then it places a 'lock' on that file to prevent any destructive action to that file until the lock is released. My guess is that you are attempting to delete a an image that is being held open in some piece of software.

I always use the camera to delete images from the card. And I only use Adobe Bridge, never open any other program. And I usually try to delete the thing from the thumbnail and it just sits there and laughs at me.....Sometimes I will delete all the images in the folder and it will still tell me that one of the images is open in another program even though there are no images there.

Hmm. That is a possibility. I've seen that word in some of my images.

Whether using the USB cable directly from your camera, or using a card reader, once the images are on your computer do you disconnect the camera or card reader by using the "safely remove device" on your computer?
If that doesn't solve the problem, you could try closing Windows Explorer, wait a minute or so, then open it again and see if you can delete your images then.

do you shoot in raw? Bridge has to render the shots and sometimes that will take awhile. Close out Bridge and then reopen
