Apparently you haven't much, if any, experience with mildly retarded individuals. I'll put it in simple terms that even you ought to be able to understand. They, although like everybody else have varying abilities and can be quite capable of many things. Some, like my son, are slow to grasp some things, but once something is explained is able to make a "rational" decision. I used "like a 7 year old" as a metaphor because it makes the point that he will never be able to live independently but it does not mean that he is an idiot.

It's true that many people do not make rational decisions when they vote, often voting against their own self interests. But beware the slippery slope that a test to vote implies. The so-called voter ID laws that have sprung up have been justified by their promoters as a means to prevent voter fraud. We all know that the real reason is to suppress certain votes. Shame on them; it's dishonest and dirty.

bgl.......I have to tell you something.......the longer you talk, the stupider you sound; You're a liberal......liberals don't even think it's "fair" to require a photo I.D. in order to vote; I could fill this page up with things that require a photo I.D......... getting a driver's license; getting on an airplane; getting a mortgage; the list goes on and on and on; but the libs don''t want an I.D. law for voters; (and everyone with half sense knows why); because liberals commit 98% of the voter fraud in EVERY election; in every election, the libs ALWAYS use dead people's names to vote; after Obama's first election, college punks were bragging about voting 10 times! But YOU don't believe in voter I.D.!

I have been hearing your "slippery slope" horse excrement for the last 50 years now; One minute you say your son is "mildly retarded; that you would NEVER allow him to go anyplace by himself; 5 minutes later, you're making a total nincompoop out of yourself, trying to make a case why he should be able to vote; you know what, bgl? I don't think YOU'RE qualified to make that judgement call; I think you're biased...to the max; after hearing some of your asinine "reasoning", I don't even think YOU'RE smart enough to vote! For a liberal to go on and on about "voter suppression" is really laughable!

Specifically what votes are they supposed to suppress and exactly how do they do so?

as bgl is quite aware - they are meant to suppress stupid voters, incompetent voters, and even illegal voters - all of whom vote his way.

Agree, but it is like blindness: There are degrees of disability. Since it is so subjective, how should we determine what number qualifies and what doesn't? Next it gets into degrees of PTSD with returning vets- at what point does it represent a mental illness that disqualifies gun ownership. I suspect that there are enough mentally disadvantages people (to be PC) on both sides of the aisle to balance out. Not a door I care to open.

I had listen to Ben Ferguson on radio tonight that Democrats want to take guns away from legally blind people. This is coming from Iowa and some other states. Before I say anything else I want to state that it is every citizen of the United States to own their own gun regardless of their handicap. I did say earlier that I felt that no blind person should not be given a permit to carry a gun but this does not mean that they can not own a gun. What I mean is, not on public streets or in public places. That would be too dangerous for by standers but in ones own home, it his his or hers constitutional right to protect themselves.
Now, about Democrats wanting to take away guns from legally blind, this pisses me off to not end. It is just other way for liberal socialist to nit-pick at our freedoms as if not knowing that it is also their freedom that they offer up. And for what? Just stay out of my freedom and out of my life! What I do and how I live my life is my business, not yours and not for the good of the collective.

I have a couple of suggestions for you. First you need to go back to school to learn how to read and then to learn how to comprehend what you read. And then I think you should learn not to jump to conclusions so fast. And lastly, you should broaden your sources of information because it's obvious at this point that you are very poorly informed.

As far as I know every State has always required some means of identifying people as registered voters when they come to vote. I've only voted in New York and New Jersey where at different times my primary residence was. In both States, once you are registered when you come to vote, they ask for your signature which they compare to your signature of the time of registering. They may or may not ask for your voter registration card.

The new voter ID laws that some State legislatures have written require proofs of identification that are difficult for some groups such as the poor, minorities, the elderly and infirm, that are difficult for them to come up with. These include drivers licenses that many of them don't have, birth certificates and so on. This is not just for new voters it is also for people who have been registered to vote for many years. In a number of cases, these laws were stayed by action of the courts. The fact is, and you should verify it independently (not at some opinion site), there is no evidence that we have a voter fraud problem in this country. Last year, there was a news story about a company hired by one of the political parties to register voters, where the representative destroyed applications to register for the "other" party. This would fall in the category of voter suppression, not voter fraud. Anyway, if you look at the groups that would have the greatest difficulty in meeting the requirements of these new ID laws, it is pretty obvious they are targeting likely Democratic voters. Even if you detest Democrats (and some forum members are very vocal in that regard) it is not the American way.

So if it's all that difficult for them to obtain a driver's license to show when they vote we should also let them drive without it since it's just as much a hardship to get it to legally drive as it is to get it to legally vote.

For those who don't drive, at least here in Texas, you get the "almost twin" of the driver's license, from the same numerous locations, that says IDENTIFICATION across the top rather than DRIVER'S LICENSE.

It's good for at least 6 years and possibly either 7 or 8 and if they just can't afford the few dollars I believe there are provisions for that as well.

There are people voting multiple times. One woman was filmed talking about her 5 votes. Are there millions of people voting illegally many many millions of times? Probably not. Are there thousands of people voting illegal many many thousands of times? Most probably.

We wouldn't want legal and legitimate elections though if it inconveniences someone to be legal.
