I agree. The tiny vocabulary ofso many on TV today is just revolting. Another thing that "bugs," me is the Poor grammar used on TV, including the commercials.

They don't call it the Golden Age of Television for nothing. Tell me...is there anything on today as good as Jackie Gleason, Lucy, Dean Martin, Ray Charles, the Saturday morning lineup, the shows that taught good over evil (westerns), Hitchcock, Twilight Zone, need I go on?

Miss those great days of what was called "The Golden Age of Television". Thanks Steve for bringing up those memories.

This question/comment is specifically directed at one genre of television programming, but does apply to almost all of them..

I Love watching tv programming that involve OLD CARS and like OLDIE GOLDIES, I do not mean a 5 year old car... Or a song that was number one in 2012....

I was watching one today called "Tail fins and Chrome" and suddenly realized that I was almost through the entire program and not a single word had been "BEEEEPED"... I happened to have 3 of the same show on the DVR so watched them..NOPE, NO CURSE WORDS...
This set me to thinking and I first considered "My Classic Car" Never have heard a Curse word on there. Then there is "Pass Time" (a drag race show) and don't believe I have heard any curse words on it either.

Then I thought of "Loud and proud" (I think that is the name) it is hard to follow the narrative for the constant "BEEEEEEEPS", and then there is (or was?) West Coast Customs... WOW didn't need any narrative, only curse words...

You get the drift... The same can be applied to a great number of tv shows today...

Before I turn you loose to comment here... it is not that I am not an adult and I have heard those words, and yes I know that for better or worse that is the way a great deal of our population speak today..... The question I have here is...

Do you ENJOY either hearing the words (some are not Beeeeeped) or knowing that the participants in the program are unable to talk without uttering curse words...????

Don't bother telling me to shut off the TV,,,,,,, that is NOT the question....

Awaiting your reply....

Mike

To Mercer...I was scanning all the almost 800 channels the other day and found probably less then a few percentage points that have any value of great TV programming. Just a bunch of TRASH and STUPIDITY on TV. I hardly watch any TV at all. More into my hobbies, reading and flying. With all this TV insanity, our future generation with be "FOLLOWERS" instead of "DO'ERS".

At least some of the programs do use the Beeep. In a few years they probably won't bother, as society continues a downward slide.

ever wonder why these words - and after all they are only words - are considered curse words?

I do not find "curse words" offensive and at times most appropriate. Notice that as they are more and more becoming just part of the common day language they lose their impact.

I think words lose their impact as society moves upward or downward to meet their level. It's kinda' like watching a mugger at work: at first it would impel me to act, but slowly, as mugging becomes more pervasive, I would probably not even notice it.

Too, words often identify the intelligence and history of socialization of the individual using them.

Finally, the setting wherein the words are used often governs the level of speech in general. In the military, we became immune to obscenity and probably used it. On return to civilian life, our language returned closer to the level we used prior to service.

None of this is written in stone. All of it is anecdotal.

I watch the ME channel and public television for the most part. So far haven't heard anything that would offend anyone. Even when Matt Dillon gets punched hs never utters a cuss word nor does the Rifleman. I am reminded of something an old WWI vet I hunted with in my younger days used to say,"Vulgarity and profanity ard used only by those too ignorant to express themselves in a decent and civilized manner."

I spent 38 years working in an environment that was flush with cursing...dealing with criminals. The Curse words do not bother me and hardly register because of my background. Do I like them? No! Does it really bother me? No! I'm with a previous post that complained about, Like, Know what I mean, Do you see what I'm saying...and many others. I was married to a lady that ended almost every sentence with, "And Everything." Drove me bonkers.

Do you see what I'm saying really bugs me. Other than with an oscillograph I have no way of seeing what anyone is saying and I don't know how to read one of those either.

On my first job as a college coach I was told it was essential to make friends with the maintenance crews. I ventured down to their building and across one wall was a sign than read: "Cursing is the sign of a small mind trying to express itself forcefully." That was 50 years ago and whether by habit or a lack of a better vocabulary, I tend to agree with that explanation for such language.

At first, Sponge Bob was funny then I realized it is a mindless cartoon. Additionally, I didn't like the way every business owner on the cartoon was portrayed as corrupt & greedy. At first it didn't bother me and I laughed at it. Then one day we were in a restaurant and my 10 year old was complaining about the prices. Well...Actually, he wanted to order a "gourmet burger" and I wouldn't let him because of the price and told him that if he wanted a burger to order a regular one - not the Kobe burger. He made a comment about the owner being greedy just like Mr. Krabs. I decided then and there to not let him watc that cartoon ever again.

Sure, we as adults can find humor in it and divorce it from reality but young kids cannot.
