I can identify with this one...went down on mud covered cinder block stairs...stopped sliding two inches before river...camera up in the air...rear down in the mud.

There are only a couple of situations where I use a UV filter on my lens. One is when taking shots on the beach. Last week while on the beach I was taking pix of the kids when my 70-200 2.8 L lens fell off my camera body. The front of the lens took the impact. I could see glass beneath it. The filter shattered; but the lens was fine. I paid about $70 for the filter which is a lot less than I paid for the lens. I felt very lucky as I kicked myself in the bum for my carelessness by not attaching the lens properly.

Weird! How can a lens fall off a body? In my 75 years of shooting I've never had a lens fall off a body. Always have made sure it was firmly attached. You were lucky you had a filter on it.

I released the lens lock on my Nikor once while fumbling around looking for the stop down button on my F. (it was new to me at the time and I was learning the camera). I caught the mistake though and clicked it back into place. That was a long time ago. I am learning a new camera now (a medium format Bronica SQA) so this is a good reminder. Glad all went well for you.

If holding the camera in your right hand & holding the lens in your left hand, your thumb is right beside the lens removal button on any Canon or Nikon camera.
I have had this happen to me. Ken

I dropped the same lens about four feet to a hard tile floor. That was several years ago. So far the lens has not shown the slightest sign of malfunction. Conclusion: I was lucky, and the lens is indeed very well made.

I had taken a number of pictures before it fell. The images were fine although the lens wasn't attached properly. I was using a canon 7d and Canon 70-200 2.8 L. The lens is extremely heavy. I've heard of this happening due to the weight of the lens.

Wow! Do Canons lose their lenses easily? How could this happen? Has anyone ever lost a lens on a Nikon?
This says a lot for having a UV filter on your lenses just for safety.

It pays to buy good equipment. That said, once you have its best to protect it. Always expect the unexpected. This is the best kind of accident to happen. One where you know you screwed up but no damage resulted. Probably never happen again. Live and learn.

Might want to install a metal lens hood if you think this could become an issue. I doubt it though.

I am really surprised you could take pictures at all without having the lens properly attached. Did you set everything manually so the lens did not have to communicate with the camera body?
I don't know anything about Canon cameras or lenses, but just wonder: when you attach a lens to the camera, does it give an audible click when it seats properly? Mine (Olympus) does, and I have learned to listen for that click before I even take my hand off the lens... Just a thougt.

Yes Esther, to answer your question, the Canon lenses do make a clicking sound when properly installed on the Canon cameras.

I know that lots of folks recommend or prefer to not keep a filter on a DSLR lens full time, but I do for the added protection anyway. Had my lenses in a fairly new Tamrac Expedition camera backback on the way back from Africa this past July. Carried it on the plane with me -- not checked. Got home and the filters on both my 80-400 and 70-200 were shattered. Lenses were fine. Have no idea how that happened.

The lens may be fine. If the filter shattered even somewhat it can be removed fairly easily. I wouldn't bury the lens yet. I agree with others that have responded that I'm surprised the camera would operate at all without the lens correctly attached. Put the camera or lens in manual focus and check to see if it focuses smoothly. Since it's a zoom check the zoom for full movement through the range. If you have a question about removing a damaged filter just PM me. It may involve using a Dremel with a cutting wheel and a steady hand but is a pretty easy repair. Send a PM if I can help.
