Lens fell off my camera body...

There are only a couple of situations where I use a UV filter on my lens. One is when taking shots on the beach. Last week while on the beach I was taking pix of the kids when my 70-200 2.8 L lens fell off my camera body. The front of the lens took the impact. I could see glass beneath it. The filter shattered; but the lens was fine. I paid about $70 for the filter which is a lot less than I paid for the lens. I felt very lucky as I kicked myself in the bum for my carelessness by not attaching the lens properly.

You're lucky. I tripped and fell on my camera. The lens was toast but the camera was fine. I gave the lens a decent burial for it's sacrifice and then bought a better one to replace it!

Lucky! Lucky! Lucky! Had you taken any pics before the lens fell off? What kind of lens/camera?

Ouch! But you made lemonade out of that situation...a better lens is very exciting!

I had taken a number of pictures before it fell. The images were fine although the lens wasn't attached properly. I was using a canon 7d and Canon 70-200 2.8 L. The lens is extremely heavy. I've heard of this happening due to the weight of the lens.

I slipped down an 8' embarkment with loose dirt. I have a scar-- but held my camera over my head on the way down. Not a scratch-- on the camera.... Priorities.

Quick thinking on your part. Sorry about the scar. :)

I went so fast I didn't have time to think! And then, the dogs were just standing there saying, "Why are you lying on the ground, momma?"

I am really surprised you could take pictures at all without having the lens properly attached. Did you set everything manually so the lens did not have to communicate with the camera body?
I don't know anything about Canon cameras or lenses, but just wonder: when you attach a lens to the camera, does it give an audible click when it seats properly? Mine (Olympus) does, and I have learned to listen for that click before I even take my hand off the lens... Just a thougt.

With my 50D I found out last year that you can't even take a picture without the lens being locked in place. I accidentally hit the lens release button and thought my camera had quit working. Luckily, a little twist of the lens and everything was fine.

I have never had a problem with the lens on my DSLR but what I do have problems with is my adapters and tubs turning - It scares me when i feel them move and I think it is the lens.

The lens clicks into the body. I was shooting in shutter priority mode. It was very odd.

I had the same thing happen last week with 70-200 f4. I was shooting with a tripod, and when I took it off the tripod it the lens came off the camera and fell about three ft. and landed on the side. No visible sign of damage, but will not focus now. I will have send it in again for repair. I had focus problem before from what they called impact damage. It seems that this lens in all brands is subject to damage more than some other lens. I still have not determined why it came of unless it was not locked on good. I had just finished take pictures with it and it was focusing good. Probable did not secure it good as I put in camera while mounted on tripop.
