Just a sample of a shoot from yesterday trying to my first deliberate outdoor portrait shot.. I started with erring towards close up shots then backed off, when I've PP'd the stand back I'll post. I haven't cropped this yet and will be cropping predominately to the left of the photo

Set up and conditions

Yongnou YN 560-II speedlight with a collapsible 24 inch soft box on full power and just moved back and forward to adjust
F3.5
ISO 100
1/160th

Weather raining & cloudy

Thanks for your comment lightcrime. The background I selected came from PhotoBacks. Perhaps a soft color would be better. Thanks again.

I find the skin on the arm is distracting. If you would crop to just the bottom of the shirt arm I believe it would improve the nice photograph that you have captured of a beautiful girl. Also as JR1 indicated cloning out the bars in the background will also help.

Fantastic Color shot. Might consider removing the right (looking at her) catchlights in her eyes (the one not made by the softbox, I think). Also the creases in her neck are more obvious in B&W. One way to avoid that is to have her drop her shoulder, pull it back a little and lean slightly into the camera but keep her chin up slightly. I prefer to have her look into the camera, but that's just me. Can't wait to see more of your shots with her.

Thanks Photog8

These are the tips I love....

Roberts assessment is a good one.

This image was overcooked. You can cook images alot but you have to have very smooth transitions.
The image was overflattened and is splotchy from post processing.
Watch for mismatches in light luminance in the eyes.(I have this problem on one of my photos on my website(LOL))
The eyes should have only a slight brightness variation from each other. The light source side can be slightly brighter but only very very slightly.

Your biggest issue is identifying small light transitions that cause splotchyness. It takes practice with a brush and the patch tool to get that right.
Keep working with your brush. Use variations to a temporary levels adjustments to see small differences in light. Use the Dodge and burn tool for small variations. Do not modify the dark points and white points only the transitions between them. The face in a photograph is defined by it's white point and dark point.(shadows and highlights adds depth)

Beware using the patch tool on a %50 layer. It can work wonders but if you overdo it you will over-flatten your image.

Make sure your eyes and teeth are not so bright they become a light source even if they are naturally that bright.

Hope this helps Joe. Keep up the good work.

Russ

Have looked at the skin and it does seem overcooked (plastic) I may have to really adapt my current process radically to avoid this... I am doing a lot of research on various skin colour effects to correct... non destructively .... Looks like this one is a no no in future...

Thanks Russ again a lesson learnt

I'm going to stand alone and say that I prefer the B&W image.
I think I was born in the wrong decade as I would gladly shoot nothing but B&W if not for constant complaints from my wife.

Your not the only one born in the wrong decade .... hopefully one day I'll get the B&W perfected... and I haven't got till the next century...

Can't disagree with any of the above comments, but I'll bet the lady loves both photos. Love the portraits, thanks for posting.

Thanks Shakey

She complained she had a hunchback when I first took the shot as it was our first shot of the day.

She would be better behind the camera.... but don't tell her that don't need the competition

How do u like this? Downloaded your low res photo and increased the size with Photo Zoom Pro 5. Then applied some techniques in Photoshop to produce this.

Hopefully you wont take this personal but I prefer the original background although with slight changes as JR1 pointed out.

In terms of reposting an image I normally ask before I change anyones image as this is a forum rule and shows a little respect to forum contributors who submit pictures so Lighthouse is correct in his comment he is just being direct and honest in his reply.

By all means have a go at changing the image background.... But do be prepared to have it critiqued like myself and take it on the chin.

I think its horrible and i don't recall the OP asking for anyone to modify his image. That is generally considered bad form unless asked for.

Thanks Lighthouse

I appreciate the enforcement of that rule, I know I fell foul of this the first time I reposted someone else's image..... Captain C put me right and hopefully I'll never do it again...

How beautifully phrased. Diplomacy in the
extreme and is to be applauded.

I prefer #1 - A lovely model with a great facial structure, allowing lighting sculpturing - a good complexion to accent the face - the raven hair provides leading lines and color contrast. Her warm character is shown thru the eyes and smile, Bet she was a dream to direct. Excellent lighting for outdoors

Pose gives the sense of being uncomfortable and slouched.
The catch light is wrong and the shading of the white of the eye.
Horns - a tight crop of just the face?
Thanks for posting I learn by seeing also.
