The more I read and compare, the more confused I get. I've been looking at Nikon p510 & L810, also the Canon sx50, power shot sx500, and Fujifilm fine pix hs30exr. Any advice welcome.

Get the Canon SX50 you won't be sorry. I have won 4 photo contests up against SLRs since I bought mine. This is an example of one of those shots with no post production.
Canon SX50 - ISO 400, SS 1/1000, F5.6, FL 67mm
Typing error. Thanks for correcting it.

Actually, many typing errors. LOL
I have the P510 and it's a fine little camera, does not take the place of a DSLR but very good for certain situations. I believe there is a newer P520 but don't know the differences.
The Sony HX300 does a respectable job too! Only one of us on here using it though, but a nice camera.
Check with your dealer before you spend big bucks. ( I would guess that 50X would make a tripod manditory) ALYN[/quote]
I have yet to use a tripod with my CanonSX50 even up to the 200X zoom.

Just a very minor increase at the Wide Angle end. Not enough to really help, just a marketing ploy!
Yes, but, "Oh, yours is only 50X? Mine is 60X!" :D

Hi Gary. Pretty much depends on what and how you'll be shooting. For years, I was deeply involved in carrying a ton of camera(s), lenses, flash equipment, etc.. but something happened.... I got old! :o)
Now my only camera is the Canon SX-50 and so far, it has done all I expect to do and then some. Terrific solution to 'lightening the load', and still giving me the choice of 'lenses' I desire, with that tremendous zoom capability. That's why I chose the SX-50. Good luck with whatever you choose, and let's see some of your work, ok? :)
You might want to try the Fuji SL 1000 50x zoom and easy controls.
You missed the best one: Sony HX300.
Take a look at the Sony dsc-hx20v

There isn't a whole lot of difference between the two except the P520 has two more mega pixels, slightly larger screen and a longer exposure...8 second's vs. 4 second's.
